Last night we went to a party for FH's dad. Pretty much everyone in FH's family expressed their regret that they couldn't make it to the shower. This was totally anticipated as they all live about 5 hours away out of state and I totally understood. However - FH has one family member that does not work and even FH's mom said she expected that this particular family member would be the only one to attend. She had not RSVPed yet, so I asked her if she was able to make it, and she told me no and gave no reason, and didn't even say sorry.
I told FH later on, and he felt bad that none of them are coming and was also very surprised that this family member is not coming.
I told my mother this today, as she is in charge of the RSVPs, and she got very nasty with me, and I said, 'I warned you this would happen if you have your shower on a Sunday. This person isn't coming because they are mad at you for having the shower on a day the rest of the out of towners could not make it.' Mind you - if I had it on a Saturday, there was ZERO guarantee that any of these out of towners would have shown up.
Mind you, it was not my desire to have a Sunday shower - it was the ONLY time to do it. Mid-August was out because of vacations, end of August was out because I have a BM due to give birth then, one whole weekend was out because it was the Jewish holiday and many people would be unable to make it. The ONLY Saturday was September 11th - and I just couldn't see having my shower then. I remind my mom of this, and again, she got nasty, and said I should have accomodated people instead of trying to make myself happy.
I'm so upset I'm about to cry.......Was it really that awful of me to want my shower not to happen on September 11th?

When I replied back to her, she hung up the phone on me, telling me she didn't like my tone of voice with her and that I was being disrespectful.

sorry you're going through this ...
why would this one OOT person come to your shower if they live 5 hours away though? i mean, i understand they CAN because they're unemployed but it's still a heck of a treck....
regardless, i see nothing wrong with having a shower on a sunday ... mine was on a Sunday too
your mom will get over it ... just try to ignore her words because they make no sense!

So sorry you have to go through this. Most people have their showers on Sundays. Even baby showers are done then. Oot guests could make it and leave early if you have a brunch, that is no excuse.
Hey, it happened, FH family can't make it...it's something that occurs. My FSIL couldn't have her DH family at the shower because it was on a Sunday and they live in Boston.

This particular person is FH's ONLY Aunt, his mom's only sibling. Who, by the way, makes a trek from Maryland to their house in Cape Cod (traveling through NY) many times a year. I think FH's mom was kinda expecting (and probably hoping) her sister to come.
But it's OK....I'm totally fine with his family not coming. I actually felt more bad for FMIL as none of her family will be there with her. And when I told my mom this, she got snippy and yelled at me for feeling bad for her.
This all just makes me not want to have a shower at all.

FH told my mom how bad she made me feel....I'm so lucky to have him on my side. She's being nicer to me....so far.
Thank you everyone for your kind words. Definitely made me feel better about this.

I'm really sorry that you're going through this. Honestly, I feel like most of the showers that I go to are on a Sunday!

Re: Shower and Mom Vent
I am so sorry. None of FH's family came to my shower and it was on a Saturday afternoon. Not even his mother came. So I know how you're feeling... it really stinks. But like you said just because it was on a Saturday doesn't mean those people would have come.

Re: Shower and Mom Vent
Don't feel bad that you didnt want it Sept 11th! Mine almost was too...and I told my mom that I didn't want to have a party on that day. She was going to do it anyway though. The only reason she didn't was because my sister wouldn't have been able to come. Also...my cousin got engaged and they are having their engagement party on Sept 12th which is a Sunday! I prefer Sunday showers!!! I feel guilty taking up people's Saturday afternoon!!!!
