shower gift question

shower gift question

I shouldn't be posting this as I'm not supposed to know when my shower is, but I ended up finding out. PS, I have been checking on my registry per the store telling me that things get discontinued. So I originally did not intend on registering for china, but in the end I found lovely china and did. I noticed that out of 12 place settings, I have 2 purchased so far. The china I selected is a little pricy and I'm noticing the things I really, really wanted like upgraded cookware, a juicer and a indoor grill - are still not purchased. What am I to do with 2 china place settings? I noticed my everyday dishes were purchased which I'm psyched about, but 2 china place settings, oh and one silverware setting (what do I serve one person - besides I only registered for fancy silverware b/c someone told FH they wanted to buy it for us - I have my grandmother's everyday set so I really don't need the whole Lenox thing, but FH told me his friend wanted to get us silverware).

So my question is, in the end when I have extremely incomplete sets, and no money to buy the remaining pieces myself... is it totally RUDE of me to return the china and silverware and pick other registry items that I really want and need? I sort of feel horrible about the thought of doing this, but what can I do with 1 and 2 place settings? It's not like they are $10 or even $50 and I can buy them myself. What is the concesus on this? Obviously I'm guessing the thank you cards should say - thank you for the china I love it rather than - thank you for the china but I bought something else with the store credit

What does everyone think? I really thought no one would buy the china.

If by the wedding or a couple of months after you haven't completed the sets and have too many missing, I guess it would be ok to exchange it for something else you really need. Unless you think that you'll be able to complete it later on?

Re: shower gift question

My SIL only got 2 or 4 of her crystal glasses, so she wound up returning them a bit after her wedding and getting other stuff she wanted more.

I will probably complete my own sets of silver, china, and crystal if I don't get all of it (and I'm sure I won't). I don't think it's rude if you later choose to return it.

China is a shower staple usually, so I'm sure you'll get more for your shower.

How far away is your shower? Many people take a long time to buy shower gifts, so I'm sure you'll be getting more stuff.

WOW - we are in the exact situation, I could have written this! I too have the addition of checking my registry non-stop (found out when my shower was to).......and instead of the stuff I could really use, people are buying the china. Which, I didn't want to initially register for cause I won't use it for probably 10 years but my mom convinced me. and I too noticed only 2 settings were bought, and 4 sets of silverware....... If we end up getting maybe 6 or 8 settings, then I may keep it and eventually just purchase the rest - but if it's only at 1 or 2, I think I'll just return it. That is a tough one though.

we registered at fortunoff's, and we got a credit card and a 10% discount up to 6 months after the wedding to buy stuff not purchased off the registry, so we will wait a little while after the wedding and then buy the stuff we registered for but didn't get. can you set aside money to get the stuff of the registry no one bought you?

If you happen to receive money as a gift for your shower, perhaps you and your fiance could purchase the rest of the china yourself - if you really want that. Just a thought.

Re: shower gift question

I went with my sister to do her registry. The saleslady convinced us to put fine china and silverware on the registry since it's traditional to have them on there. I told my sister put it on and be mindful that you are probably not going to get complete sets which is how all brides' mindset should be when doing the registry.

IMO if you don't get complete sets, returning them is ok and getting something you truly need. I believe most people realize that unless you get full sets those items will be returned.
