I have to be completely honest- I HATE SHOWERS!! I think they are totally boring, the guests just sit there and watch the bride open gifts. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to 'liven up' a shower? (without making it a 'jack n jill shower')

you could also incorporate some shower games into the mix.
IMO, the Toilet Paper dress is always a crowd favorite.
Also, if you don't want the gift opening to be insanely dragged out, let whoever is throwing the shower for you to write on the invitations:
'Please Be a Dear, Wrap In Clear'
This way you won't even have to waste time actully unwrapping the gifts, you can just look at, hold it up and say thank you and move on to the next one - especially if you are having a lot of people at the shower, the gift opening could take well over an hour.

why not ask for a see through shower where all gifts are wrapped in see through cellophane, this way you don't have to spend all that time opening things!! For games use love songs, or any theme the bride likes and play name that tune. You can also do musical boquet and who ever the music stops for they have to share a secret to a good marriage.
