Who gets invited? Fh and I were talking about it today, and I was asked to keep my list down to 20, because his mom already has a list of 15 people from his side that shes inviting...is that normal?
eta- Overall who do I invite? Do I invite aunts even though we arent close? and what about co -workers?

Re: Shower question
oh lordy don't get me started - imho, the fmil should not have more guests then the brides family and should not be telling anyone that the brides side should be kept low.
my fmil pulled this crap and it complelty pi ss ed me off. invite who you want to be there.

Re: Shower question
hmm, i made the guest list myself! i went my the wedding guest list and for my fil's side, i picked the female members that we felt should be there---not all of them, but close members of whom i will be able to recognize. invite who you want, you make the guest list, not your fmil! ~lacey

this is exactly what my sister did. she got the guest list from fh and then asked me if there was any one else. we cut people from work, b/c it doesn't have to be everybody. tell fmil to do the same, or just do it for her.

Re: Shower question
there are a few schools of thought on showers - you can invite every woman that is invited to the wedding, or you can just have family. you don't have to invite your co-workers spouses (if co-workers are male.)
it is really about who you want it to be, but if they are invited to the shower, they have to be invited to the wedding - that is the only rule there is

Re: Shower question
I made my list, then my mother and FH's mother, added people that they wanted.... I tried to only invite people that I was close with - I really don't want alot of people there that I barely know.

Re: Shower question
We're actually having the opposite problem, FMIL only wants 10 guests and we have a tiny list. My mom wants her to invite more.

Re: Shower question
I didn't have any say in this because mine was a total surpriese. I have to say that I was so much easier that way, because I didn't have to deal with anything shower related except register and buy an outfit to have on standby.
My Mom limited my FH's mother to family only and she decided to have her own shower. There was 35 at my Mom's. It was mostly family (15 girl cousins/wives of cousins and we are all very close), the wedding party, and FH groomsmen wives that live nearby and friends that live nearby. No friends from out of town were invited and no one from work was invited. I have worked at my firm for 4 years, so I have a bunch of friends there. My Mom didn't want a huge shower because she thought that it was asking for presents. (Still got an amazing amount of presents)
My mil shower is yet to come, but I think it's about 25 people. I do think that 1shower of 60 people would be too big.
It took me a really long time to open gifts from the 45 people invited to my shower (10 couldn't make it), anymore I wouldn't have finished in time.
My cousin had 50 at her shower and she only opened about half the presents.

Re: Shower question
Personally, I feel that a shower should have the ones that you are closest too. I agree with that statement asking you to keep your list down is totally wrong.
I was not asked for a guest list of whom I wanted at my shower and there were quite a few people that I did not want invited for the mere sake of me barely knowing them (for example, co-workers spouses). I was embarrassed when I found out that people I never even spoke to sent me a shower gift. I appreciate all that my family did, but I really would have liked to have kept certain people off but I can't do anything about it now.
Keep it close to you, there is nothing worse than opening a gift, having no idea who the person is and looking around through a sea of people's faces.

Re: Shower question
Typically the invite list consists of female members of both bride and groom's families, the bride's friends, the bride's bridal party, the SO of the groom's BP if they are also friends of the bride, and any other people the BRIDE wants to be there. It is not a showcase for MOB or MOG.
My MOH/sister asked me for my guest list over a month ago. I included the wives of two of the four GM. I didn't include the other two because I've never met them - EVER. I also included some of my mother's friends, but they have all known me since I was @ 5 years old. The rest of the list is immediate family or my friends.
