is there such a thing? can i just send cards and write whatever i feel like or i should follow some rules/guidelines?

i dont know of any rules i would write a general thank you

I would just make sure to personalize the card by mentioning what that person gave you. I think it makes them feel a bit more appreciated than just simply writing thank you. Thats my only suggestion

I literally just started to write mine out -- I am definitely going to try and mention the specific gifts people gave.
