Signing checks

Signing checks

Question for you ladies...we're about to sign the checks to bring them to the Bank. Do I sign with my new name or my old name? All of the checks are made out to my new name, but I don't know if the Bank will take the signature because they don't have it on file. Any ideas?

Re: Signing checks

that is a good question

I have a related one..... I want to switch banks to WaMu and I want to have a joint checking acct with FH. I haven't changed my name yet but could I put it this way on the checks:

Thomas Lastname
Jennifer Maidenname NewLastname

anyone know?

Or does it have to be official first....

Re: Signing checks

According to our Bank, they need the official paperwork before they can switch our names on our checks.

Chippa, thanks for the FM!

Re: Signing checks

It has to be official first because you have to go in with your marriage certificate.

You can sign the checks with your new last name and deposit them in the bank. There will be no problem as long as it is a deposit.

For the joint account though you will need to have some official document with your new name on it to open the account.

Re: Signing checks

you have to sign it with the name on the check...

I thought since I hadn't officially changed my name that I shouldn't...but I had to add his name at the window...

Re: Signing checks

Sign with the last name that is currently on your account, then underneath that sign with your new last name. That is what most banks want. Can't help you with the other question because I kept my maiden name on my bank stuff.

Re: Signing checks

well if you are opening an account it will be with your new name, so it shouldnt matter.
Just bring a copy of your marriage cert.
