hi, sorry if this is a silly question! I'm the first one of my friends/family to get married so I'm new at the wedding planning stuff.
When you register, do you receive those gifts at your bridal shower? Do people bring them to the wedding? Who is invited to the bridal shower? Do people give gifts AND money?
I'm so confused about this, help please lol.
Also another unrelated question- when do people usually have engagement pictures taken?

Re: silly question about registering/gifts
epics- at your discretion- we're waiting till June for nicer weather
depends when you register: if b4 eparty then may get some gifts off of it for eparty
if not for eparty- most will buy off of your registry for shower.
i would believe most would give monetary gift for your wedding gift
shower invitees are females closet to you. sometimes not all women coming to your wedding invited to shower if you are not close to them but again this is just my experience

I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can, but we too are the first of friends/family to be getting married.
I think as far as NY custom, you are mainly registering for your bridal shower. If you register early, you may get engagement gifts from your registry as well. I believe most people bring them to your bridal shower and you open them there in front of everyone.
Again, as per NY custom, people traditionally give monetary gifts for the wedding. If you have out of town guests, many prefer to give wrapped gifts for the wedding because in the rest of the country cash is seen as impersonal and tacky.
As for the bridal shower guest list, I think just female guests ranging from close friends/family only to a larger group of women. However, you should only invite people who will be invited to the wedding.
Someone who attends the shower and wedding will probably give gifts AND money, but at different times.
Hope this helps

Re: silly question about registering/gifts
In NY, the registering is mostly for gifts for the bridal shower. But if you are having an engagement party, people do tend to register then and get gifts from the registry for the e-party.
I've never seen a person bring an actual registry gift to the wedding. Usually everyone in NY does bring money.
NY really is one of the few places where people give money as a gift at a wedding. In other places, they usually give an actual gift.
Your shower invitees are female family and friends that you are close with, and female family and possibly friends that your FH is close with. Not every female getting invited to your wedding gets invited to the shower. You have to sit down and make a list of who you want at your shower. And you'll need FH to help out to make a list of his relatives - like his mom, sisters, aunts, cousins, etc that he'd know would want to be at the shower.
It's kind of not fair to be a girl invitee to a wedding cause not only do you have to give a registry gift at the shower, but then you give the cash gift at the wedding too. It's so much expensive to be a girl!
Sometimes people do a 'Jack and Jill' shower, where it's a male and female shower. So both the bride and groom are there, and invite their close friends and family.
But I would say the majority of the people still do a traditional shower where it's just for the bride.

About the engagement pics, you can do them anytime you want. I think most magazine checklists I've seen have it down around the 6 month mark. But a lot of people do the e-pics soon after booking the photographer. Cause you might want to use them for a Save the Date, or to send out an engagement announcement to family and friends.
