Silly questions!

Excuse my ignorance but what does family style mean when you book a party at a restaurant? I know what family style is but at a restaurant for a party, does it mean that your guests all take food from plates in the middle of the table? Like pass them around?
Or do they not do that for parties, just for regular dining??
Also do restaurants charge a service charge like catering halls?

Thanks girls!!

very big portions... everyone shares... rather than ordering individual meals

Re: Silly questions!

I went to a wedding in New Hampshire that was family style. It was very interesting! The meat wasn't so bad, but it was so hard to serve the pasta in your formal attire !

Family style for an engagement party is fine (especially if you do the hot appetizer plats like that), but I would ask what exactly will be served family style (i.e. request that the pasta be scooped out by a waiter!) - just easy to pick up stuff should be family style.

yep
each plate serves 2-4 people (depending on your group of people, and restaurant) and you order a few different plates and everyone shares.
