Since I keep reading about so many of us leaving LI, I have a question about jobs. This may be a totally stupid question, but please bear with me.
How do you go about getting a job in the area that you are moving to? Do you save money before you go, and hope that you'll find a job when you get there? (not a good option I know, but do people do it?) Do you schedule a trip and try to schedule a few interviews while you're there? Are companies open to phone interviews? FH and I are considering a move, but I'm clueless as to how to get a job in an area that I don't live in at the moment. Anyone have any tips? TIA

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
I am one of the crazy ones that is moving to an area where we bought a house and hoping to find a job when I get there. I am so afraid that I won't find anything in my field and that I will have to work at a grocery store or waitress (not that there is anything wrong with either of these, just not what I want to do).
we moved without jobs...but it wasn't like we didn't look before...
we had saved and I stayed in NY a few months while DH went out to get a job (a lot of companies won't look at non-local applicants - b/c then they have to pay moving expenses) - so if you know someone with an address you can put on your resume...or if you can get a cell phone in hte right zip code...it may work to your advantage

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
I have a 7 year plan..hahaaa It involves saving massive amounts of money over the next several years, moving to SC, buying a condo or small house and then look for jobs. I met conceed to rent something for 6 months so we can find jobs first and look for permanent housing closer to where we work.

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
About 4 years ago, I moved from LI to CA...long story and obviously I came back.
About one month before I moved I started sending out my resume to online job listings in the area... I researched salary requirements, commuting costs, etc. Well the week before I moved I had had two phone interviews and two 'real' interviews llined up for when I got into town... I had a job upon a week of my arrival. It's all in the planning.

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
As soon as FH decided where he wanted to move, I sent out resumes to companies in the area. All of my interviews started as preliminary phone interviews, although in my cover letter I mentioned that we would be in the area to look for housing on such-and-such date and would like to arrange a meeting. For the phone interviews that went well, the companies flew me in to meet in person.
I was just too scared to wait until we had moved to start looking. We didn't have any kind of savings at that point...

We plan on moving to PA...we'll still be able to commute to the City...however, it will take 2 hours. I'm going to try to do it as long as I can...and in the meantime, we're going to TTC...my DH will commute to Manhattan for as long as he can keep his job at the NYSE.

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
I agree with the idea of jobs not looking at out-of-state applications. Unfortunately, the company may feel that they will have to relocate you and bear some of the expense. That is one of the reasons I am waiting until I get down to Florida to apply for jobs.
FI and I saved a ton of money on our NY salaries and purchased a home with that money. Since our mortgage payments will be less because of the down payment, we will hopefully be able to afford the monthly payments on lower salaries.

You might have already done this, but you could look online to get a general idea of job availability in your new town. Many cities have a 'Craig's List'-type community board with job listings -- or you could search Monster.com or Career Builder by state/town. Also, even tiny local newspapers seem to have websites these days, so those are worth checking.
Good luck!

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
I sent my resume out to places I was interested in, I basically searched the local newspapers, monster.com, large companies HR dept websites, etc... I actually listed on my resume with my fiance's local address and my cell phone number. I got calls back and scheduled my interviews for weekends I was in town visiting him. I was hesistant about moving here without a job. It turns out, I got a call on Monday for a job interview on Friday, I took the day off and literally flew into town for 9 hours (plane landed at 9am, had a 10 am interview that last until 1pm, and I flew out at 6pm). I got the job and moved three weeks later. It is harder to job search when you are out of town...it is important to convey to the employers that yuo are really moving there no matter what. They are more hesistant to hire somebody who is moving just for the job. GOOD LUCK!!
Jenn - we rented first - before we bought...but we too went into it thinking - can we survive on a min wage job...(with the savings we had)

Re: Since so many people seem to be moving..
Thanks everyone, you've all given me such insight into the situation. I'm willing to move and take a low paying job (for a while), but we don't want to move without at least one of us actually having a job before we go. I don't know, maybe we'll change our minds and just go. But then there is the problem with renting an apartment. All of the rental companies that we met with said that one person in the apartment would have to have proof of income of at least 2X the monthly rent. Do you think they will waive that requirement if we have a good rental history, great credit, and enough savings?
