Ok... while I was PG my skin was GREAT! Well, since I had my son, my dry skin has gotten really bad. I had been to a dermatologist a month or so ago, and showed her my legs and my scalp, and she said it's psoriasis. Well, I've always had it on one of my legs just a little. Now, it's on both legs, really bad. It has spread a lot. I won't even wear shorts! She prescribed an oil lotion but I haven't been able to be consistent using it... my fault. Maybe that's why it's spreading. Anyway, (sorry I rambled), has anyone else experienced skin problems because they're breastfeeding? I thought it was because of giving birth my hormones were different, but it's not getting better so I can only come up with it being because I'm breastfeeding. What do you think? Are the hormones any different? Thanks!

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
I highly doubt that bfing is the cause of the skin problem. Stress can cause problems and your hormones can be different after birth too. Did you make sure you can use the cream while breastfeeding? I would double check since some of them you can't.

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
You really don't think it has anything to do with it? It's just that since I gave birth, my skin got horrible. It's not like 1 or 2 months later, it was pretty much right away! Will my hormones ever go back to what they were, or are they changed forever? I'm just so embarrased by the psoriasis. I haven't worn shorts yet this year.
I'm pretty sure they said it was safe. I'll definitely double check again.

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
My skin was horrible in the 1st and 2nd tri's, and then again from giving birth for about 2 weeks. The derm said it was Rosacea, it looked more like eczema to me. But it was hormone related. We just weaned and again, I noticed the same red, itchy, scaly skin. But it was ok in a few days (ok skin for me, is still not without its problems, you just can't see it a mile away!) So it seems when ever there are major hormonal changed, sure enough the skin went nuts.
Also the Derm would not let me take anything except one cream that he said was safe to use while preggo and BFing, and even at that he said to use a very small amount. None of that stuff is tested on pregnant/nursing women.

I don't know what to do?
I was at the Derm probably beginning of July. I didn't get the prescription right away, but did start trying the samples they gave me. Still, I only use it for a couple of days and then forget to put it on, etc. Now I'm starting to get nervous using it? They said it was fine, but do I take their word for it?
The stuff they gave me is called DermaSmooth.
It said this on the manufacturers website...
Nursing Mothers: Systematically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk and could suppress growth, interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production, or cause other untoward effects. It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® is administered to a nursing woman.
Can someone translate this into English for me?
Also, they want me to use Neutrogena T-Sal for my shampoo.
Should I stop using everything and just use regular lotion until I'm not Bf'ing anymore?
Thanks girls!

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
Sorry I can't offer any advice on the breast feeding or the skin care. I did want to share about the Neutrogena T-Fal shampoo though. My husband is sensitive to a lot of shampoos and they can make his scalp super itchy and uncomfortable. He has been using the T-Fal stuff for a couple of years now and it helps him out A LOT. He says he notices a big difference.
I hope you feel better!

Personally, I would not use that cream while breastfeeding since it says that it gets into your milk..

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
You should call your Ped and tell them the name of the cream you have and ask if it is safe to use while breastfeeding. They have a big reference book that they look it up in.I have to remind every doctor everytime that I give my daughter breastmilk. I even have to remind the GYN when I needed an Rx.
I would discontinue the cream until you ask the Ped and get an okay. Then I would begin to use it correctly and see it if clears up the condition. If it does not go back to the Derm and discuss another option.

Re: Skin problems while breastfeeding...
I have suffered from eczema and psoriasis my whole life. I was in the same postion as you at one point in my life where I would always wear long sleeves and pants to hide it. It got worse in my pregnancy and has gotten worse after he was born. But now I don't care, I have very dry itchy skin and it looks bad, but I try to put lotion on it and keep it moisturized. I had for years also used topical corticosterooids to control it, but now with breastfeeding, I won't use anything Rx because it does get into your breastmilk.
I would stop using your Rx, ask your doc about something non-steroidal and remember to use moisturizer at all times.
BTW, I don't think it has anything to do with breastfeeding.
