sleeping position question

Can somebody explain why it's really bad to sleep on your back? I am in SO much pain and discomfort on my side...particularly my left - I have the Snoogle and I just keep finding myself on my back when I wake up. Fortunately, I wake up every hour to go to the bathroom, so I am not spending too much time on my back. When I ditch the snoogle, I get really bad leg cramps and my hands get all pins and needles. If I HAD to pick a side, I am more comfortable on my right, but I know the left is what is best.

i think it has something to do with the compression of your insides due to the weight of the baby... I know you are supposed to sleep on the left side to get the most O2 and other things to the baby.

Here I found this for you:

Question: What's the best sleep position during pregnancy?
Mary O'Malley: While there's no real harm in sleeping on your right side, lying on your left side is actually good for you and your baby: It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. That, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands. If you train yourself to sleep on your left side early on, you'll have an easier time falling asleep when your belly is bulging later.

Avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, impaired breathing and circulation, and even low blood pressure.

If I can sleep I don't care which position I am in. Frankly, just sleeping is all I care about at this point

Michele, that's how I feel! Between the peeing, the cramps, the puppy getting up...I just need some sleep!

Re: sleeping position question

Jenny I've heard that if you must sleep on your back that you should prop a few extra pillows under you so that you are in a reclined position and not flat on your back.

Good luck
