Dh and I went to a couple of animal shelters this weekend in search of a small dog (preferably a puppy). we really love puggles but do not really want to pay so much for a dog when we could get a rescue or adopt one from a shelter. anyone have any suggestions of people they know or websites? we already went to north shore animal league and bideawee, as well as north hempstead animal shelter (although those dogs were a little crazy!) TIA

Re: small dogs?
if you call the american kennel assoication and tell them what breed you are interested in they will give you the kennel club information for that breed...they only rescue that particular breed of dogs so you will probablly have a better chance of finding one. one of my co-worker had done this with both of her dogs.

Re: small dogs?
I am surprised you did see anything at North Shore Animal league. You can also go to Petfinder.com you type in the breed you are looking for and the zip and it will turn up with dogs that meet your criteria and all are from shetlers. I volunteer for a dog rescue group called Luckyfund you can fill out a form and tell them what breed you are interested in and they will call you if they get in what you want. There website is luckyfund.org - FM if you have any questions.

Re: small dogs?
We had the same problem...we wanted a small dog and tried so many rescue places, including North Shore Animal league. We ended up buying a pekingnese at Shake a paw in Hicksville, which was reasonably priced, but started on petfinder.com. GOOD LUCK...keep us posted

Please don't buy while others die. Adopt or rescue a shelter pet.

Re: small dogs?
Check out the ASPCA in NYC (92nd and York - it's actually a really quick trip from LI since it's right past the Triborough Bridge). I was there a few weekends ago and they had a few small dogs - a lhaso apso (sp?) and a shih tzu who were both very cute. Not too far from there is the Manhattan Center for Animal Care and Control (110th between 1st and 2nd).

Re: small dogs?
Please look up Shake a Paw online and see how many complaints they have against them about the wellness and health of the puppies they sell. That is the store you should stay away from.

Re: small dogs?
We got our dog from North Shore she's under 30 pounds and the perfect size. We went a a rainy miserable Wednesday night. There were tons of puppys there.
