They evacuated Macys AND the Empire State building.......... It stinks in the city...I smelled it when I got out of Grand Central..... Is anyone watching the news? Is it on TV? Im thinking it might be more updated than what the have on CNN.Com.
Thanks ladies!

Re: Smell of gas in NYC
It's a gas line on 10th and Bleeker. Bloomberg says it's not strong enough to be harmful, but still be cautious. They're working on it, but they know it's NOT a natural gas.

Re: Smell of gas in NYC
There's no need to panic. It's not as huge of a deal as the media is making it out to be. I just had a long talk with FH (who also works in midtown like me and is an engineer). He said it's not a big worry - those buildings are being overly cautious. Of course, downtown needs to be a bit more cautious, but there's no reason to panic or even worry that much.
To be honest, I never smelled it, but I got to my midtown office by 7:45AM, and as soon as it was reported, the fresh air dampers in our building were shut (they're usually not wide open in January, anyway).
I think some buildings were evacuating out of fear of liability to customers / tourists...
The media is reporting that a private contractor hit a gas pipe downtown (Bleecker St area)but it is unlikely that is he source of the smell.
ETA - I think PATH service is temporarily suspended, and there might be some subway delays, too.

Re: Smell of gas in NYC
Glad I dont have to be on campus today then (I got ot NYU and Bleeker is very close by)...I hate the smell of gas
We live uptown and fortunately we can't smell anything up here. My parents live downtown and they said it's really bad. As if we don't have enough to worry about here!

I am not saying they are related BUT they closed down main street in Austin, Tx because they found dozens (over 60) dead pigeons in the street.

Oh that's odd (and gross).
There's no evidence here that any foul play is involved. I highly doubt the two are related (though I know you didn't say they were).

Re: Smell of gas in NYC
hate to disagree, but a stench like that, while maybe not gas/explosive, is most certainly toxic and hazardous. Anything in a lab that smells like that has 20 hazard warnings attached to it. The city always says it's harmless when they don't know what it is... just to prevent mass panic.
My bet: one of those chemical plants in NJ either leaked a sulfurous compound, or their normal exhaust from those stinky smokestacks got trapped near the ground since we have this odd weather today.
try to avoid it the best you can!!!!

FH works in Rock. Center and said an e-mail went around his office saying if anyone was bothered by the smell, they could leave. All of the salespeople went home.
