Smoking Ban

Smoking Ban

Is the smoking ban affecting your weddings? A friend of mine went to finalize her hall & when she said she just want the smoking to be in the cocktail area & not the hall. The hall said that they don't think they can allow smoking because of the ban starting in March!! What the hell!!!! MY FH is a smoker & there is NO WAY he's going to hold off smoking for a reception! I can't see having to search for him all night outside so I can have a dance with my husband. Does anyone know the legality on this? This will TOTALLY screw up my wedding! Alot of my guest are smokers! I'm beginning to freak!! I hate this stupid ban!!!

Re: Smoking Ban

I was told by a number of places that the law is very unclear about catering halls and since you are renting out the room it becomes a 'private affair' and you have the power to decide. . .smoking or no smoking. . .But when I tried to rent a VFW hall (looked at 5) for my FH 30th birthday they all said no smoking because of the law. . . but then I found a Knights of columbus who said we could smoke because of the reason stated above

so I'm just as confused as you are and most places don't completely understand the law to begin with. . .
We are taking a wait and see attitude. . .but we made sure our room had a nice little balcony where the guest can go out and smoke if the ban affects us!

This is interesting so what about the places that offer the cigar and cordial addition to the wedding reception???

We had no problem with this issue. Not many of our ffriends smoke. Our relatives that did, well they just had to get up and go outside.

I'm having no smoking regardless Tracy, but I could understand your concern.
Why don't you ask your banquet mgr. about it?

Mike Bloomberg is an a$$hole who should be more concerned with the fact that cops don't get paid a decent wage in this godforsaken city, firehouses are in danger of being shut down and teachers are being assaulted on a daily basis than second hand smoke for bar workers. What's next? Telling us to wash behind our freakin ears? Is he gonna check my teeth to make sure I brushed?

And I voted for him.

I'm a smoker also and will not be having smoking anywhere during the reception. I just don't like the smell of smoke while I'm eating. I do think that I read though with the new laws that smoking is alowed in private clubs and I would assume that most catering halls would be considered 'private'.

I dont smoke, but I do agree with Thrilled. It seems the mayor wants to clean up NY but at the same time put restrictions on everyone's lifestyle.

If you smoke hey its your body, but who is the mayor to tell you that you can or can not smoke in certain places.

I dont know how my catering hall is handling smoking. I hope that those who do smoke for a few hours wont because I dont want anyone to miss a thing

Re: Smoking Ban

Both FILs smoke heavily so a no smoking place was not really an option - although John Anthony's does offer the huge patio downstairs for them to go outside. But the smoking ban is just the 5 boroughs, right? Nassau County has one too? Howlong have they had it if indeed, there is one?

Re: Smoking Ban

The ban in Nassua county takes effect in March. We have smoking in one part of our reception location but I will have check with our banquet person to ask if private places have to follow the same rules.
