My FH's friend's new wife just announced that she is pregnant. She is about 4 months along...and she is STILL SMOKING.
When I was around her this weekend I felt very uncomfortable when she lit up a cigarette. I don't want to be around her until she quits.
My mother smoked on and off when she was pregnant with me, I'm assuming out of ignorance. But now that we all know better, is it me or is smoking while pregnant just outrageous??

I agree with you 100%. I've seen pregnant women who smoke (there was one at my office last year) and it makes me want to scream! Especially since I am TTC and doing everything you're supposed to (or not supposed to) do. Its extremely aggrevating. And some people will use that 'our moms all smoked when pregnant with us' excuse but that drives me just as crazy!

I think it is disgusting and selfish. I can't stand to be around someone who is smoking..so watching a pregnant woman smoke makes me cringe!

My mom smoked thru all 3 of her pregnancies and my friend's mom told us that the first thing you packed in your hospital bag was a carton of cigs! But that was 30 years ago and they had NO idea about what the effects were on the baby. My cousin smoked thru her pregnancy and she told us that the doctor told her to cut-down atleast whatever, these people are crazy. A very close friend's SIL smoked throughout her pregnancy and it drove everyone nuts but they couldn't force her to stop. The funny thing was she refused to help paint the baby's room because she didn't want to breath in the fumes and she was worried that carpet cleaner smells were harmful to the baby..yet she was putting cigs in her mouth every hour or more!!! I avoid people like that.

People that smoke/drink just do obviously STUPID things while pregnant make me want to SCREAM!!! They have no regard for the health of their child. The poor baby can't request that they not do it. Even people who have children and smoke around them like its no big deal. When people smoking outside stores and I am walking by with Emma I pursposly walk 20 feet around them to help keep Emmas lungs clear. Oh those people get me so mad.Where are the childrens advocates when we need them???

I'll never understand why some women insist on smoking while pregnant. It's only 9 months out of one's life (Or more if BFing) but still, come on already

I know too many people who continued to smoke during pregnancy, and 1 person who smoked a joint once a week throught her pregnancy.

No offense but when anyone refers to what our parents did...years ago...it drives me crazy. You are right, they did not know how bad some of this stuff was, it's in no way a valid argument to say 'well my parents did this and I turned out fine' (Im not saying anyone here is doing that)
When you smoke, there is oxygen taken out of your blood...the same bloodstream that carries oxygen to the fetus!!!! It also doesnt allow for the absorption of many nutrients. In addition to low birthweight other serious side effects are premature birth, stillbirth, high rates of SIDS, placenta previa. Why why why would anyone do this to their unborn child?
I know someone who smoked while pregnant and I couldnt even be around her, it's near impossible to not give to the 'lecture', which is never viewed as helpful because the smoker know what they are doing is wrong.
It's very sad really.

I surprised to hear people complaining about pregnant women smoking in this day and age. I, fortunately, haven't seen this in such a long time and I assumed that all pregnant women stopped smoking because of all of the bad effects. I'm very upset to hear about this - these pregnant women can't claim ignorance because there has been quite enough ads teaching people about the harmful effects of smoking.

Elizabeth- my mom has even said that if she knew then what she knows now she would not have smoked, most likely, at all, let alone during pregnancy. her doctor even allowed wine once a day! but she said that it made her feel sick so she didn't drink it but lots of her friends did. so I am NO way advocating that we should be able to do things like they did.
Even the bike helmet law- tons of people say 'you were fine and never wore a helmet' and I always say 'yes, but you probably don't know one of the thousand child killed because they weren't'
People will find ways to justify any behavior.

How selfish to smoke while you're pregnant. My little man was a surprise and the second I found out I quit and I haven't had a cig since he was born - he's two now. Every time I look at him I can't imagine ever doing anything to harm him! If you smoke or drink while you're pregnant...SHAME ON YOU!!!

It's funny how times have changed: When my mom was expecting me, she quit smoking immediately. As a result, she gained so much weight that a few weeks later her doctor told her she was better off smoking in moderation!
I have just about quit smoking...and it is SO hard...and there are relapses (I have about 1 cigarette a week now)...I did this b/c I want to TTC - I am making DH quit before we TTC too...(he is down to 3 a day)
but please remember...nicotine is more addictive than heroine is...I know it doesn't make it right...but drugs can do evil evil things to people...
