I just didn't want to spend the extra money on a bassinet since they can only be in it for a few months. If someone were to get one for us, that's great... but I didn't want us to have to get one.

Re: So a newborn is safe in a crib?
Yes, a newborn is safe in a crib. Will you have him in your bedroom with you? That will make the first few weeks easier since there are so many feedings/changes, etc... Not to mention 'new mommy neurosis' .
Sean moved into 'his' room and his crib at 7 weeks... it was MUCH harder on mommy than him!!

Yes you can put a newborn in a crib. I think bassinets are mainly for the convinece factor. With a bassinet the baby is right next to you when you need to do a feeding. As oppsed to getting and giong into another room. but a baby can go in a crib from virth and be perfectly safe, Just make sure there are no stuffed animals or comforters.

I think another reason people use bassinets is that they are more snug and cozy feeling to a baby rather than a big crib. Lyla was only 6 lbs when she was born, and we even put her in her carseat sometimes to sleep so that she felt safer. Swaddling also gives the snug effect.

I agree with Niha. Definately swaddle the baby in a receiving blanket (youll MASTER how to do that at the hospital ) they LOVE that cozy snug feeling. and the crib will be perfectly fine!

You MUST be very careful that you do not put fluffy blankets and/or any pillows in the crib with the baby. Also, make sure you have a firm crib mattress. But yes, lots of newborns go straight from hospital to crib at home.
