So here's the typed up 'agreement' between us and FMIL (aka tenant and landlord)

I thought you girls might want to see - just for $h*ts and giggles

AGREEMENT
September 1, 2008 – August 31, 2010

Tenant: Jimmy and Marisa
Address: 58 F******* Lane
C*********, NY

Rent: $1200 per month beginning September 2008. This will be the rent for 2 years – after 2 years it MAY go up if the taxes or homeowners insurance go up.
- The rental due date will be sometime between the 1st and the 15th of the month – to be determined a little later.
- Rent does not include any utilities and we must also pay (for a minimum of 1 year) for a landscaper to come and take care of the lawns.
- It is an open lease agreement – we can choose to leave anytime, as long as we give 2 months’ notice. Mom & Dad could also choose to evict us at any time, with 2 months’ notice.

Mom & Dad: Responsible for the homeowners insurance and the taxes.
- We are responsible for the first $300 of any major maintenance/repairs (excluding the washer and dryer), and then Mom & Dad will pay the rest.
- Mom will start cleaning out Grandpa & Grandma’s things beginning this coming weekend (May 17).
- One room upstairs will be utilized just for Mom & Dad’s storage. No garbage in the garage – start going thru boxes as soon as you can.
- If we choose to get a dumpster, we will split the price with Mom & Dad.

Marisa & Jimmy: We are allowed to keep the truck in the driveway, as long as it’s kept covered when not being worked on.
- We are to start cleaning up everything that is ours in the house.
- Jimmy will finish spackling and painting the upstairs hallway. MAYBE paint ceilings.
- After Jimmy finishes upstairs hallway and we clean up, we will have an appraisal done on the house.

Addendum:
- No additional pets without prior approval. Absolutely no breeds not covered by Homeowner’s insurance – including, but not limited to, Pitbulls, Doberman Pinschers, and Rottweillers.
No major home improvements/renovations without permission.

Jimmy's the one who made me write everything down. FMIL added the 'Addendum' at the end but that was all. Welcome home

Sad that it has to resort to this.

About the lawns...I would be more specific. Like if you just have to pay to have them Mow the lawn.

so is this supposed to be just to 'keep the peace' or do you want it to be legally binding?

Marisa, forgive me in advance, if what I say is inappropriate, with all due respect to 'Mom and Dad' What the world are they think'in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just can't believe as a Mom, some of the stuff in that renters' ??? contract????? There are some things terribly amiss here!! I'm sorry, but I think you and FH should be getting a better deal!!! Where's the love and wanting to do all you can for your children????? Maybe there are things I'm not aware of, so forgive me if I have misspoken!! Mary MOB

I re-read it and I think you can get a better deal at a garden apartment -- with none of the arguing and bs

Hmmm... IMO that is absolutely ridiculous. What is keeping you there? Seriously? I know you have a large dog from your other posts, but seriously, I would NOT be able to deal with that crap. This may come out all wrong, bc I don't know you, FH or his family, but what kind of parent puts their child in that position? If I were you I would just find another place to live. $1200 + utilities and landscaper?! You could do much better somewhere else. Good Luck to you and FH!

Oh my goodness.... I've had quite a few apartments and mother in law drama and I'm telling you now run. This will be crazy for you and you can find a nic apt. anywhere for $1200/month.

Good luck

It's too bad that your FIL's made it get to this point. At least you have it all in writing. It sounds like in this situation you need to put everything down on paper. Good luck! Hopefully everything works out for the best.
