Send in for it. You'll have all sorts of information prior to signing on the dotted line to see if it's really something you'll want to do.
My cousin did something like this, but after receiving the paperwork, she decided it wasn't for her. But that was for a Comedy Central show about weddings (which I think never even got on the air) so it was definitely more on the humorous side and less on the documentary side of things.
