So it looks like we're getting a house...

So it looks like we're getting a house...

..In Pennsylvania. DH is sick of working just to pay rent/mortgage & taxes, and he wants a lot of property, so it looks like we are moving to Pennsylvania. We went this past weekend & saw about 15 houses (it was a long day) and are considering 2 of them seriously. We have to still talk to our lawyer, yet, but it is pretty much a done deal.

Beleive it or not, we are going to commute 2 hours into NYC to work. I am getting tired just thinking about it.

Thanks!....I like the sound of that!

I have been thinking about it for quite some time...I actually almost took a job in London right before DH proposed.... I just never thought he'd leave NY....

The houses were so beautiful, and the amount of property you get is astounding.

The commute is tough though. My boss does it every day. Leaves home at 5:45. Gets to work around 8:30. Thats almost three hours each way door to door.

Good luck.

I was just saying to my FH that we should do that! But we work in Western Nassau so I think the commute would be too much. I wish we could leave, though Good luck! I'm somewhat jealous but happy for you!

I just moved to Central NJ and a normal day for me to commute to Manhattan goes like this:

545 - get up
706 - get on the train
815-arrive at work
615-leave work
830-get home

it's exhausting....and i try to leave work by 515 but it hardly seems to happen....after a month of this i am seriously considering looking closer to home.

BUT - good luck with the house - it's exciting

Re: So it looks like we're getting a house...

Just some insight from someone who used to have a long commute...

I used to commute from NYC to Westchester and then I moved to NJ and then I commuted from NJ to Westchester ( about 3 hours roundtrip).

I think it's all about the quality of life you want. I would leave at 7am and get home around 7:30pm, cook dinner and pass out on the couch and start all over again the next day.

I had a new job in NJ after 6 months -- I started looking after having the long commute from NJ to Westchester for 3 months. Now I work 15 miles away from home and I actually get to do other things during the week aside from just work.

I also have friends who decided to move to South Jersey and work in the city and after 2 years there they are looking to move to Northern Jersey to have an easier commute.

I am also going to have a longer commute-2 hrs or so. I have been commuting from Cold Spring harbor for 9 years now, soon (if we get this house) I will be commuting from either Stony Brook, or Ronkonkoma.

You'll get used to it.

Congrats!

Where do you live? I grew up in Princeton and loved it! I would move back in a second.

Re: So it looks like we're getting a house...

Thanks everyone! I am ok with the commute... I used to DRIVE 2 hours to get to St. John's everyday, so a 2 hour train commute will be a big break for me! DH has never had to commute...we have always lived within 15 minutes of his job, so I hope he can handle it. What we are planning to do is move & keep our jobs, then possibly find closer work, if the money is right. DH makes a pretty decent living, and I think he will have a hard time finding work making the same amount. I, on the other hand, hav no job, so instead of looking on LI, Bklyn, Qns & Manh... I am now looking in NJ, Westchester, and Manhattan.

We plan to move before our lease is up in January... If we find a home before then, my sister & her bf will finish our lease.
