So, my mom made a good point the other day...

Original post by dedecakes

We are getting married in August, which means it is going to be fairly hot. The ceremony is at 3:30 and we don't want to have a huge recession line because we want plenty of time to take pictures. So, lets say we get in the limo by 4:00/4:15. We get to Jericho Terrace at 5pm with a good solid hour (and 30 minutes) to take pictures. Fine.

What will our guests do from 5-6? Where will they go to beat the heat??? My mom is thinking of opening her house up to guests to come to in between. I told her she's crazy!

What do you girls think? What did you do or will you do if you have some time in between the ceremony and cocktail hour?

Okay, so lets me give you some background info:

FH's family is coming from Italy/Venezuela. Not many...maybe 10 in all. They are all going to be staying with his family...not renting a hotel. To be honest, I'm not even sure how they are going to get around that day. I guess they will borrow FH's parents car. Others are coming from Brooklyn...it's possible that they will not attend the ceremony.

Then there is my side...they live in NJ. They are too close to book a hotel, but too far to go back and change. I mentioned that to my mom and they were like, oh no...they will definitely be at the ceremony!

We are talking probably 30 guests out of 130, that we are worried about...but still. I guess I will just call JT and see what they say.

Thanks for your help, ladies!

Are you blocking rooms at a hotel that has a bar/restaurant? Because if you are, you can 'subtlely' say on the accomodation insert of your invite that the hotel bar and restaurant is open for all guests during the time before the start of CH. I'm going to have a HUGE gap, from 4-4.30-7:30, and that's how we're handling it...plus our RH doesn't offer a courtesty hour and we were threatened on pain of death if the guests arrive earlier than 7:15.

hmmm yeah first i would figure out how they are going to get around, maybe have others carpool with them which would make it easier for them since they would be with ppl that know their way around.

I wouldnt worry too much until you talk to JT. Tell them your situation and i think they will be fine with it. I spoke to them about it since i had a big gap, ceremony was at 2:30pm and CH started at 7:30pm. We specifically asked what if guests come an hour early and since we told them they had no issues with it and knew to have things ready.

I saw above that somebody posted and said they werent allowed in, but i would also think they would at least allow ppl to walk around the lobby and the whole place, i dont see how they would stop ppl from doing that at least ya know. Ive been to other events there and we just always walked right in and nobody asked us anything or tried to stop us, one time i did show up early with DH bc it was before our wedding and we had to actually make a payment anyways and were attending a wedding same weekend we had a payment due. We got to the RH early even before CH started and had no issues. But maybe the bride didnt let JT know ahead of time that guests will arrive earlier than 30 mins. I think 30 mins is the norm but if you need to do it more than that i think they can work it out for you as long as they know ahead of time to have the room prepared.

My place lets them in whenever they come and serves them and all. But then again I am the only party there ... so it might be different.

Re: So, my mom made a good point the other day...

I have the same problem, I posted a similar thread a couple weeks ago and got some good respones. My wedding is in the summer too so i'm afraid of the heat as well. The whole timing thing kinda stresses me out! Our church is at 3 and we are having a mass so everyone says we will not be out of there unitl 4:30, then we will go take pics. We can start our cocktail hour at 6:30 or 7, so our guests will have 2 or 2 and a half hours to kill (including half hour travel time). Some people say dont worry about it guests will figure out it, I do think that is true. You are not responsible for what they do in between BUT i do not want to be inconsiderate to them either. So our two ideas are 1) have a very small gathering at my parents house which is rigth by the church. just a place where people can gather in the AC and have some light food. our idea is to have an aunt or neighbor hostess at the house so my parents can be with us for pics. we would probably have the priest announce this at the end of the mass and also include something welcoming people to our home on the church program. 2)our other idea is to write on the church program(possibly in the invitations too) something about places to go inbetween. just say you can visit the shops in port jeff and grab coffee(we would word it nicer haha maybe in some cute poetic way) I've also heard of people giving guests a 'scenic route' to the RH instead of a direct route. we will def do this, have them travel on 25a instead of 347, it will take them a little longer to get there then!

anyway hope this helps, in the end its probably not a huge deal but if you can offer the guests something to do it might help!

Plant a Mister Softee in the parking lot of JT?

Honestly, if it were me, we'd prob stop somewhere in an effort to not be the first ones there...and very likely a bar...

My ceremony ended around 4:45 and my reception started at 7:30. Most people either went home, or back to their hotel to change into their reception clothes. They were actually happy to have that extra time to get into their dressy clothes and not have to sweat in them since it was 98 degrees that day!
My grandmother also opened up her home for family and close friends to hang out if they wanted.
