I really thought this wedding thing was going to be exciting(the planning), but it is so stressful. I think what it comes down to is that I have NO IDEA WHAT I WANT! LOL. Truth is FH lost his job for 8 months and just started a new one in May and we don't have an enormous budget. My father mentioned that he wanted to help out, when we first got engaged, and now has not mentioned a thing. Should I ask him? How do you go about asking someone for money? I have never been good at asking him for anything..even though he can well afford it.(parents are divorced) Mom and brother don't talk to my dad. Anyway it is just hard for me. I guess I can't really do anything unless I know what or if he will contribute. I want it to be simple and before the year is out...however...I have no hall or dress or dj....Help! I feel like I can do this for like 15-18,000. What do you ladies think?

Re: So Sad(Kind of Long)
I'm a blunt person. I'd say to him 'Remember how you mentioned possibly helping us out with the wedding? Are you still able to do that for us?' See what he says - at the worst, he'll say no and you'll be in the same boat. GL!

I really want to just know how much he wants to contribute. I need to know so I can figure out what we can afford.

Awww, hon, I can empathize; My DH was unemployed for awhile. I think if your Dad offered, perhaps you could say something like, 'Dad, you know FH has been unemployed for 8 months, and while we're so happy he now has a job, we are really strapped for money for the wedding. If you still would like to help us, we would really appreciate it!!!!!' Mary MOB

Re: So Sad(Kind of Long)
Yes, I agree with the previous posts about asking nicely
If you want to know how much he is willing to give you, just ask him if he felt comfortable with paying for the hall or maybe a few vendors or if he planned on giving a set amount. I think if you are nice and honest about it, you should have no problems
And if you need help on planning and finding the best deals out there, you have your LIW girls!

Re: So Sad(Kind of Long)
i think if you figure out a budget, figure out how much you and the FH will be able to aford and see how much more you will need. i would add a little more and ask him for that (just in case you go over budget) Im sure since he offered before he will not have a problem helping you guys out!

yea you need to know this so you have to ask this as well. you just say i need to do a budget and so i need to know a figure just so i know where i am at with a budget and then i know what price ranges i can book for the different things. you def have to find out what he plans on contributing specifically.
