So sad...My job is cracking down on internet use

Don't they know I have an addiction problem? We got a notice saying we could be dismissed for internet use if caught. I guess I will pop on and off occasionally. Now what will I do all day? Work?

'if caught'

you need to check with your network people if they are actually tracking internet usage and how they do it. sometimes companies say they monitor, but they really don't. the network people usually have bigger fish to fry... however, if someone suspects you of being online all day, they can perhaps go back to the computer people and have them produce logs (that is, if they are monitoring it in the first place)...

Wouldn't doing that call attention to internet usage??

It's true they probably won't go out of their way to check everyone but anyone they suspect of abusing company resources are probably on a watch list already.

So do I, but I don't sign their checks either. Push comes to shove, they still have a job to do and I wouldn't put them in the position where they have to cover for me.

Well.... I am a network guy. Ill be honest... 99% of network guys don't give a crap what you do on the internet... as long as it doesn't impact their work. Meaning... if you install something on your PC that screws things up and causes them issues... that will piss them off.

But frankly... i dont have the time to go through the internet logs snooping around. But yeah... I would say almost EVERY company has some sort of monitoring software. It comes with any internet package you would buy.

So just because nobody sees what you are doing... trust me big brother can watch your every move from the network admin's desk.

Making friends with the admin is always a plus... bribes are always welcome.

Oh... and one other thing. This is an EASY way for a company to can somebody.

Lets say they want to can someone cause of lack of work. Or even if they are downsizing and want to avoid a huge 'layoff' news. All they gotta do is just terminate you... and in your exit letter they simply say, 'Was let go because he/she abused the company internet SLA policy'.

Real easy for a company to kick people out. Beware of this.

I do the same.. one of the FIRST things I do when I get a job.. get to know the network people as well as the distribution/copy/mail room folks. They are your BEST allies!
