So ummm, what does 'sunset' mean?

I looked up sunset times on this website Sunrise Sunset, but what do those times mean? Does the sun START going down at that time or does it start like 20 minutes earlier and then the sun completely sets at that specific time (5:54pm on 10/30)? TIA!!

It's either when the sun touches the horizon or disappears below the horizon...

Technically, the sun 'starts setting' at 12:01 pm, right after noon, since the sun is continually moving all day... so there'd be no way to measure when it started setting, KWIM?

ETA, I'm pretty sure it's when the last edge of the sun disappears below the horizon.

I don't know...but maybe keep an eye on it tonight and see how it coordinates with what the website says for tonight's sunset?

I think the sunset time is the time the sun is no longer in the sky...

You should check to see what it says about the sun set time for next week and then see what it looks like outside on that day. (Today is a bad day to try it out b/c there's no sun)

I asked wikipedia and it said this... which basically just means on October 2nd at 7:30pm I can't get married outside ... FRICKING FABULOUS.

Sunset is the daily disappearance of the sun below the horizon as a result of the Earth's rotation. The atmospheric conditions created by the setting of the sun, occurring before and after it disappears below the horizon, are also commonly referred to as 'sunset'. The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment the trailing edge of the sun's disk disappears below the horizon in the west. Due to refraction of light in the atmosphere, the ray path of the setting sun is highly distorted near the horizon making the apparent astronomical sunset occur when the sun’s disk is already about one diameter below the horizon. Sunset should not be confused with dusk, which is the moment at which darkness falls, when the sun is about eighteen degrees below the horizon. The period between the astronomical sunset and dusk is called twilight

Sunset: 6:38pm
Twilight: 7:05pm

So basically you can still see stuff at the end of Twilight but not well and my ceremony is 30 minutes after that.
