so the day FH & i got engaged the first thing my SIL said to me was, 'are you going to change your name?' & i said, 'yes.' & she wanted to know why. so i told her that it would show FH how much i love him & that i am committed to him. (she changed her name when she married my brother) well 6 months later apparently this is still topic of conversation. while out the other day with my 7 year old nephew, he asked me if i will still be apart of his family even though i have a different last name. i was so upset when he said that to me. i realize that he is only a kid but kids hear things & repeat them. i secretly cried while in the shower that night because i was so hurt that someone would put something like this into his head.
should i confront my brother & SIL or should i just leave it alone?

Re: so upset
I would personally leave it alone, as long as you explained it to your nephew that you are still part of his family, i would keep as that.
I try to keep things as Drama free as possible, i wouldn't confront it unless more things start happening

Re: so upset
you need not to explain yourself. I really feel as the kid grows older he is going to realize that you are his aunt no matter what!!! I know you are hurt but really don't try to confront because it might turn ugly just let it slide

I would leave it alone. You don't know for sure how he got that in his head. Maybe he heard something on tv or misinterpreted something from your SIL.
Kids always come up with the funniest stuff. One time Fh's nephew said to me 'you can't love uncle andy since you are not married.' That's not true of course but he thinks love between two adults is marriage. So you never know....

I might mention it casually, but I wouldnt make a big deal of it. I am quickly learning that kids come up with their own things...and most of the time they didnt hear it from someone else.

Re: so upset
the thing that made it so bad is because i know my nephew so well. & i know he knows that i will still be apart of his family. he even told FH that he would like to be the best man because he is the greatest uncle. & the day we got engaged everyone was so shocked that no one could give a congratulations speech so my nephew gave a very heartfelt speech.

People are always going to think you should do what they want you to do. Do what makes you happy and if taking FH's last name is it, then do it.
I wouldn't bring it up though to the kids parents. Leave it be.

well i don't know if she said something to him directly about it or if he just remembers her saying it the day we got engaged.

I would leave it be. Unless you know for a fact that she said something, why cause drama? Sometimes kids say things they've been thinking without being prompted.
