Ok well as many of you probably have been reading in the paper or seeing on the news, there are alot of problems going on. Lately, ive been seeing the effects. FH's close friend and his fiancee who work for the same company are now out of work bc their company went bankrupt, they are mortgage brokers. Basically giving out loans that people can't cover and other things.
At work, we trade mortgage securities and the prices have changed alot and not in a good way. Its hectic today.
They say bc of such high costs its stopping people from buying, or people buy houses and then realize later they can't really afford it, and homes are getting foreclosed and so on.
So there is a chance that homes are gonna go down bc of the effects its having. I mean its a cycle in the economy that always happens and this is why people are able to predict what is going to happen. Prices go up high but its gonna get to the point where people are spending less bc of it, they aren't putting it back in rotation, businesses suffer, then bc of that, prices go lower, people spend more and you all know, not gonna write it all out lol

LOL im from queens so all of LI is east for me...nassau is like ok not that far, depending which part. Suffolk would be real hard on us. My commute is long now and from suffolk it would be bad, and same for FH. We go to massapequa alot and when FH mentioned it i was like uhmmm thats a little further than i was thinking about

exactly..you're purchasing the home AS IS. You won't know what the inside looks like, how many bedrooms, the condition etc. And even though the home is in foreclosure. Nassau and Suffolk are still VERY expensive. People were talking out 2,3,or even 4 Mtgs on their home. I work for a foreclosure atty...I'm insanely busy at work now!

LOL, I'm from even further east - Port Jeff!!! I don't think it's 'out east' but I went to college at NYU and law school at St. John's, so everyone was from Nassau/Queens and they'd always say 'wow - you're from the sticks!!' Guess I just started thinking 'yeah, i AM from the sticks!!'
The Centereach schools are OK - they're not great, but I wouldn't say there is anything fundamentally wrong with them. I have 5 or 6 cousins that went thru that district - one went on to Harvard. Port Jeff is one of the top NY school districts (not PJ Station, but Porf Jeff). It's a pricey area, but it's definitely possible to get a more afordable cute little ranch house there.
Smithtown schools are really good. Kings Park I think is pretty good which is near smithtown. Part of centereach and many other towns go to sachem which is decent. Connetquot (Ronkonkoma, Bohemia, and Oakdale) was pretty good when I went there but they've been in the news a lot!
I work in Port Jeff and I owe my job 4 years after I graduate. After that As long as we can afford it I'm pretty much open to any area. FH wants to live in Bayside. Ummm maybe we can afford a 1 bed coop there. LOL.

I was at court for a foreclosure sale recently and one of the homes that started a bidding war had an outstanding mortgage of around $400k!!! The home ended up going for around $449k. This means that the person who won had to have $44,900 CASH available for a down payment. Then, on top of that, he had to have the money for ejectment AND repairs. Oy vey!

FH was saying he hopes we don't get like Japan where a family buys a house and the generations after them are still paying off these houses. It is very discouraging to see how much a decent house costs these days so I hope the prices do decrease. I feel so bad for all these mortgage brokers.

where i am in forest hills, the attached homes start at 700,000 the new ones near me, right near forest hills high school are between 1 and 3 million its insane
the 2 bedroom apartments where we are (garden apt. not a building) have the bedrooms upstairs and everything else downstairs plus a basement so thats what we want for now
on the outside it looks like 2 levels but then there is a basement and its finished so its like an extra room

My parents are looking for a house, they have been waiting for a while so the prices can go down. Is it easy to get a foreclosed house?
There are tons of listings on foreclosed homes, but the problem is they aren't that much cheaper than non foreclosed homes.

This is why we are moving to NH about 1-2 years after we are married. I love my family and will miss them, but every time I start to think I don't want to move, I read smething like this thread and say, see, this is why I am moving. In the area of NH we are looking at, you cna get a 3 bedroom house on 1-2 acres for $175-200K with taxes less than $2k a year. It's sick. Cost of living is less, salaries are only a little less than here, and the standard of living - and how my kids will grow up - will be so much better and safer.
Part of me is dreading leaving my family, but part of me CAN'T WAIT because of how wonderful it is there.
(I know it won't all be great - no place is perfect.)

it has gotten just ridiculous. If you are comfortable with the move then definitely go for it. If you figured it all out ahead of time, and looked there for jobs to see what they have available in the field you work in and you are satisfied then it will be ok.
Fh always says we should move to florida or vegas because his job has headquarters there. BUT it wouldn't be the same for him. He was promoted to Project engineer, meaning he is in charge of the jobs he is giving and everyone he works with will work for him. They are getting him ready for the executive jobs so personally i think it would be stupid for him to leave. Here he works for them for years and already proved himself. The people he works for here love him. Going somewhere else he would get around the same type of position but it would be starting all over again to really prove yourself to them.
Big problem is i have a problem with moving, and i hate that im like this and want to get over it. I mean its bad, i have a problem moving from queens to massapequa when FH mentioned this. Although in coconut grove florida i actually said hmmm i might consider living here lol. I act like a child when it comes to this lol

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm in Queens and FH is in LI. He's on the boarder though and he works in his town (lucky). I have to commute into the city and I'm next to grand central station not Penn so it's a pain for me to get to from Queens let alone Nassau. We'll be looking in western nassau near his town. I will eventually leave my job, but for the next few years it won't be much fun commuting.

FH and I are planning to move to Florida. We bought a 1/4 acre of property there this past November and after the wedding we'll probably have enough money to have a brand new home built. My parents recently moved down there and they LOVE IT. I'm not sure how much I will like living in Florida but I do know that we will love having a huge brand new custom built home, a big backyard, and an inground pool. Those are things that we would never be able to afford in Staten Island/NY. Plus FH can transfer to the Florida office and keep his salary - so money will not be an issue - the best part is I will definitley be able to stay home when its time to have babies - another thing that we would never be able to do here....I don't know how people afford living here - FH does really well and my salary isn't too bad either - we are making well over 100K between the two of us but houses out here are sooooo expensive - anything decent is around 400K in my neighborhood - and thats with no backyard! Hopefully the market does come down so everyone can afford to have a beautiful home in a nice area......

i forgot to mention that of course i will miss my friends and family in NY but at the same time i want to do whats right for FH and i.....and i want to do what will be best for when we have a family......i love NY so much - and i used to think that i would never move away but i when i think about the lifestyle we can have in Florida it makes me feel much more confident in our plan to move away....plus i'll be with close to my parents and sister who i miss so much!

It makes it so hard looking for an apartment because rightly so neither of us want a long commute. I can't leave my job because I will have to pay back my tuition money, money I don't have and he can request a transfer doesn't mean he'll get it. We are kind of stuck!
