SOCIAL SECURITY FOR NAME CHANGE - WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!!!

OMG, I am soooo angry right now. I just spent an hour and a half of my life in line at the SS office. The people that work there are SO mean and once I FINALLY got up to the window I give the woman all my papers and she is like, 'where is the original??' and I was like, 'come on!' and then DH is like, 'we're not leaving here until this is done' and the woman throws all my papers at me and was SOOOOOO rude. I swear, I could have gone postal that moment. I just wasted all that time for nothing!!! I read nothing about an original marriage certificate...my officiant is sending that in....ugh!!!!!!!!!!

you do need to have the original certificate the state sends you. However, that is no excuse for that woman's rudeness! I would have reported her azz to a supervisor!

Unfortunately you have to have the original marriage certificate...I was wondering how you got it so quickly to change your name!

Sorry to hear about the extreme rudeness though. Completely uncalled for.

When I changed my name they weren't exactly happy people.

You have to wait for the one that comes in the mail, from the state. NOT the one that comes from your church in the mail. Typically it takes a few weeks.

People $uck. Luckily, I had my marriage license by the time I got back from my honeymoon, it took less than a week to arrive to my house (in North Carolina). You should get yours soon. I am sorry that B!tch was like that to you, that is totally unacceptable. Some people are just miserable

I know she was rude, but on every website they state you ALWAYS need the original for EVERYTHING! I'm sorry, but unfortuneatly I know someone who works for the goverment and they are treated so badly but patrons. She was probably extremely stressed and then to see a copy when it is widely known that you need the original set her off.

Yes, you definitely need originals. I had an amazing experience at the SS office in lower Manhattan. I suggest going at 9 am - terrific people!

I had a terrific experience at the one in Melville on a Friday afternoon at 2! But originals are a must for your name change except with Credit card companies...They take that over the phone!

Sorry you had such a horrible experience! Some people are so rude. I would have reported her to her supervisor.

I'm sorry to say this, but if that set her off, she needs to find a new job. There is NO excuse for what she did, period. That is JMO.

The form actually says they only accept original identity documents. Sorry the person was so rude about it.

THEY GET PAID VERY, VERY LITTLE, SO THATS WHY THEY ARE SOO RUDE AND OBNIOXIOUS! SCREW THEM, I'D GO BACK AND GIVE THEM AN ATTITUDE AS WELL!

Actually, they are paid quite well, especially for overtime. They have great health benefits and a program that matches dollar for dollar what they put into a retirement savings. I represent Social Security disability claimants and I'm a former SS employee. I really miss that matching program since I left that job. They are very understaffed and stressed, but then again it gives them more approval to work overtime. I deal with these offices all day long. Some of the employees are just plain rude. I'm willing to guess that if this person went to an office in Suffolk, it was the one in Patchogue. My best experiences have been with the offices in Melville and Riverhead. I agree that if they give an attitude, you don't have to take it. I ask for supervisors the minute I see any attitude!
