The photographer I may use is rather affordable for NY prices and has a decent package. However, the cost of a soho or coffee table type album is $2600!
Is this normal? Any feedback is appreciated.

Some albums do cost a lot. But if you love that photogrpaher, use them and then have your albums made elsewhere or do them yourself.

Agreed. you can get a flushmount if you do it yourself for about $400 foor a good sized one. But you need to either do the layouts yourself or ahve someone do it for you. I work with two diferent companies and those are the avereage prices.
photographres mark up the price because they are paying not only for the album ($$ depends onw aht company they use to print) then they need to make a profit so that price doubles and if they do nay creative work its time and energy.

You can use vendors who do just album designs. They may offer the album style you are looking for.

that is steep - how many pages is the album? if it is a lot - there is a ton of creative work going into it!

for 20 pages. for 40 pages, it's $200 more and so on.

That is definetely on the pricey side for 20 pages. Unless there is something special about the photogs design style/albums, I would keep looking or opt to make your own album if a cd is included.
I loves my photogs albums but they were pricey so, although I ordered one for myself and decided to cut elsewhere, I could not afford to have parent albums too. I plan to make my own parent albums!

if that's what you call a magazine style, mine costs about $1100 for 70 pics (2006 prices) - - not sure how many pages that would be, depends on layout.

you know i read somewhere you can get your album done by another photog as long as you have a cd of the retouched images.

Hmmm- it could be alot or maybe not so much. Some of the albums that photographers use actually cost them alot of money as well- besides the amount of time it takes for the layout. It really depends on which brand they use for the album.
They are really hot though

Yes, this is Karenscape. She is nice and I think she'd do a great job and her package is reasonable for NYC, it's the damn album!!
The brand is Graphistudio for the albums. I guess I could inquire w/them how much it costs to do one to see if I am being really hosed.
