Soloist help - tenor or soprano???

So I'm supposed to decide if I want a man or a woman (tenor or soprano) to be my soloist at my ceremony. The only think that I know for SURE will be sung is the Ave Maria. There will be other songs too, but not sure which.

So I think that the man might be at my church soon to sing at the regular mass, I can go hear him. But not the woman unless they can tell me where to find her. They asked me almost as if I should know and not need to hear them, so I felt silly asking.

What say you ladies?

I say go with whomever you can hear. If you can hear them both make a decision after that. You don't want to pick someone you haven't heard. What if you don't like their voice?

I think tenor voices sound so beautiful with songs such as Ave Maria......but I agree with Bunny Bride, you'd definitely want to hear them before you book them! so if you're interested in the woman's voice, def. get it out of them where you can hear her. good luck!

I agree - Go with who you can hear. And don't feel funny asking when or where the girl is singing. You are giving the church a LARGE 'donation' - they should be able to accomodate you with that info.

Ok, stupid question coming your way... am I right in that the tenor is the man and the soprano would be the woman in this case? Just checking.

yes, you are right.... a tenor is a man who sings and has better tone/sound in his higher register. A soprano is a woman who sings and has better tone/sound in her higher register.

I sing and I am a sucker for a good tenor... YUM! to die for. . . i would go with the tenor... but first, I would see I can hear both and choose the one you like best.

If the church is recommending them, they are probably cantors in the parish. find out Masses they do and go and then decide.

You need to hear them. Sometimes its not who has a better voice but who interprets the song better. If someone truly feels what they are singing it comes out so beautifully. At our church we have a professional tenor (who is paid whether he sings at a wedding or not) but many of our friends have asked my father to sing it rather than the professional because of the feeling behind my father's voice (then again he does have a great voice) and truly feeling the words of Ave Maria.
Listen to both. Some like tenors because of the fullness of a tenor's voice other like the soprano because it can represent the bride singing it to Mary. It's a personal choice.

My church gave me a CD of the 4 soloists they have...I already knew I wanted the gentleman that sings at the mass I attend on Sunday's though. I just love his voice...( I love the tones in the tenor voice)

I would try to hear them sing before making your choice
