Some of my finished Cross Stitch (PICS)

Hi Girls,

Just thought I'd share some of my finished cross stitch.

This one is called 'Storyteller.' It's a traveler telling a story to a dragon. (Obviously!). It was a real challenge!!

This one is a celtic cross. I stitched it for my DH's mother before we were engaged. The picture doesn't do it justice, though. The center of the cross is gold beads, and the knot work around the cross is metallic gold.

This is a little baby I just finished for a friend of mine who's due on October 31. I don't have a picture of it framed yet, but I framed it in an oval silver frame. There's a crystal tear drop hanging from the top of the moon, and two shiny blue stars hanging from beaded 'ropes.'

I've got at least three other 'works in progress.' Now all I need is the time to work on them!

Jenn;

It's called counted cross stitch because you work from a large printed pattern on a grid and count the number of squares to stitch in each color. A little bit like paint-by-number, except that the design is on the paper not the fabric (generally - you can get a printed cross stitch sometimes)

Here's a link to an online site where you can buy some kits - you can also get them at craft stores like Michael's and Joann Fabric.

Jen,

It's just like KarenH said. You get a printed pattern to work from. It looks like graph paper with a symbol in each box. Each symbol represents a different color thread or 'floss.' You stitch one 'x' per box in the color the symbol dictates.

Confused yet??

Most people start on a fabric called Aida cloth. I attached a picture of it. You can see how the fabric forms it's own 'boxes.' These boxes correspond to the boxes of the pattern. See?

After you're doing it for a while, you can graduate to linen instead of Aida cloth, which is what I prefer to work with. With linen, though, there are no 'boxes.' You kind of have to count the threads of the fabric, which is a little tricky if you're just getting started.

Pick up a kit and give it a shot!! You'll understand it better if it's in front of you.

I like to cross stitch by only stamped. My eyes go nuts with counted.

Very nice work.

Jenny,

For me it doesn't take patience, because it is SO relaxing. You just zone out in a way and stop thinking about all the worries or concerns of the day. You don't think of how long its taking to finish it, you just look forward to working on it, and spending some relaxing time for yourself.

The only time it gets a little frustrating is when you realize you mis-counted and have been stitching along for like an hour only to find everything is ONE box off!! Then you have to take it out!! When that happens, sometimes I just put it down for the day, and come back to it another time. But thankfully, it doesn't happen too often!!
