Some Wedding Reminders... (Up to #6)

Some Wedding Reminders... (Up to #6)

In one of my magazines there was a two page wedding related article that I want to share. It was women sharing what they think is self-evident about marriage but would be helpful to be reminded about! There are 15 in total, I'll gradually add throughout the day and bump up...number one imo is the best advice though.

1. Getting married is not about the wedding.
As soon as I got engaged, all anyone wanted to talk about was the 'big day'. Was I having a band or a DJ? How many bridesmaids? Where would we be honeymooning? For a year and a half leading up to the wedding, it became everyone's obsession-including my own. No one ever gave me helpful advice or wanted to talk about how great it was that I was making a lifetime commitment to a man I loved. Now I try and do that for my friends so they don't get caught up in one day.' - Elizabeth, 29

2. You'll give up some independence, and that's a good thing.
'I have always been independent, probably to a fault. My husband has let me take care of myself without having to be a 'macho man' about it. When I got breast cancer the entire process was sometimes more than I could handle. It was the first time that I let me husband carry me. He stepped right into the role, as if he had done so all along. There's a trust there. After 23 years of marriage we've learned that as long as we stick together we won't hit the ground if we fall.' - Sherie, 45

3. Husbands can't read minds any more than boyfriends can
'Even though you have been with someone for 10 years and you share a home, a bed and a life, they still can't read your mind. Even husbands need to be told how you are feeling and what you want, they're not as good at picking up on signals as women are. Even if it's been the same signal for the past 10 freaking years!' - Sandy, 36

4. You won't be single anymore
'For a large part of our engagement, I felt so much grief at the single phase of my life ending. It was like I was mourning the end of my existence.' - Kate, 37
(*I don't agree with this opinion, I think if someone feels this way they aren't ready to get married)

5. You never get to use the 'I can't make it I'm busy' excuse again
'Once you are married, it's harder to get out of events. When you're dating you aren't obligated to go to this birthday dinner or that family gathering. But after you're married, excuses just don't cut it anymore.' - Stacey, 30
(*I need to let FH read that one )

6. Your husband will never take care of you the way your mom day, and vice versa
'No matter what the vows say about sickness and health, your husband will never dote on you during your illness like your mom. That's not to say he will not bring you soup and medicine, he will. He will also most likely cloak himself in a painter's mask, bring along some antibacterial hand sanitizer and hightail it out of there the minute he feels it is reasonably acceptable to do so. But when he is sick, he will expect that you drop everything and attempt to rise to the level of care, devotion and perfection that defines his mother. You will inevitably fail at this mission, so it's best just to let it go.' - Angela, 32
(*That one is funny, FH is like that when he's sick)

My FH brings up #1 all the time...but it's hard not to get swept up in the planning...

True, especially about the first one.

Oh of course (myself included) but it's so true that everyone talks about the wedding....that one day...but maybe some advice about a marriage once in a while would be useful too.
