Wow...thats beyond tacky. I think in general, asking people if anything is real is tacky (designer bags...jewelry...body parts lol).

When I FIRST got engaged and was showing off my ring. FHs ex (and I should have known this was coming) looked at it, and said: 'that's really pretty, but it's kind of small, no?' TO MY FACE. I turned and said: Well, it's bigger than the one you'll never get.
She shut up, and we haven't seen her since.

I';ve had the same thing happen to me when i worked at my last job. This woman said OMG your ring is amazing. Im sure you wish it was real. I was like HUH? It is. and she said Hunny when you get older I'm sure you'll meet a nice man who will buy you a real engagment ring. I walked out and slammed the door on her. I wanted to choke her white trash A$$
