Here's the back story --- DH has a co-worker that lives in Germany and is from Italy. When we were on our HM in Venice he drove 8 hrs to come see us and spent the day with us in Venice and showed us Murano & Burano as well. It was the best day ever.
He visited NYC briefly in October (all work and no play) and we just went for sushi with him (DH did spend a week working with him in person instead of skype).
Now he's coming for 10 days in February and we want to show him a good time! He's excited to see Long Island and Ronkonkoma... I was like, 'Why?'
So what 'fun' things are there to do on LI? Everything I think of is Summery or Christmasy. Should we take him to Roosevelt Field Mall? LOL JK...

Re: Someplace fun on LI???
The aquarium is always fun. You could take him ice skating at one of the parks here on Long Island. If he likes hockey maybe you could find tickets to an islander game for cheap.

The wineries are open! Some do close during the week in the winter, but almost all are open on the weekends and and most are still open during the week too. I go out there all throughout the year!

this wouldn't really be classified as fun but you should def drive him by the beaches or something, show him where the lighthouses are. Obviously not that fun in the winter but def different then Italy or Germany.

Even though it's winter you can go out to Montauk and check out the lighthouse - not sure if it's open for you to go up in it, but you can get into the park to see it.
Wineries are always good.
I liked the idea of the Islanders game too.
You can go to the planeterium (sp??) and I'm pretty sure there is a Long Island art museum too.

Would you believe it - last time he was here DH took him to a pre-season Rangers game at MSG after work... (DH loves hockey)
I'm liking the wineries... Esp since Italy is known for it's wine - let him try ours!

Re: Someplace fun on LI???
I would find a cute little breakfast spot on a nice Main Street in a nice village or town somewhere just to start the day off. Some nice walking towns are Northport, Babylon Village, and South Hampton. I would definitely do the whole out east thing because everyone around the world has heard of the Hamptons. You would then be close enough to Montauk and also the wineries. Long Island is all about the beaches so even if he visits in the winter, I would at least take a nice drive down to a lighthouse somewhere or down Ocean Parkway. If it cold out grab a cup of coffee and bundle up.
There are also one or two on Long Island that could be fun. The Blue Point Brewery has a cute tasting room and I heard there is another brewery somewhere also.
I would definitely also consider going into a nice neighborhood in Queens or Brooklyn. Park Slope has a great museums, Prospect Park, and great lunch/dinner spots.
Pick up a copy of Time Out New York to get a few more ideas about different events, restaurants, etc. going on in and around the city. Their website is pretty informative too.
The Rangers are playing pretty well right now so you guys could always catch another game and then head out to McSorely's for a post-game drink. In the winter time they have the old wood-burning stove going and it is always a fun place.
Personally, I would avoid shopping malls, but to each his own.
You'll figure out something if you put your mind to it, good luck!

blue point brewery!
wineries are always open
you could go to Hunter Mountain (which is about 3 horus from LI) for a weekend of ski/snowboarding
Empire Raceway has casino
Montauk is dead in feb, not a lot of action, and most places are closed for season, its acutally a little depressing
always check out newsday online, they have a list of events every month

Re: Someplace fun on LI???
greenport brewery company and then to the wineries
OR if you want a 'club' feel go to Artful Dodger in Huntington or there are a ton of cute pubs/coffee houses.
I used to go to The Cup a couple of years back - I think it's in Wantagh? They almost always have live music which is nice.
Or you could take him to the Milleridge Inn? I know it's still kinda Christmasy but the food is good and they have their little village, etc.
