Why don't you look into permanent sub or teachering assistant jobs on LI? That is a sure way to get your foot in the door....and that is how many people get their jobs out here. Good luck!

Sorry to hear this Kat! Unfortunately, teaching is definitely not my arena, and I know nothing about it. However, would you consider a private school? Are you only looking for public schools? I dont' know whether or not certification is in place - but aren't there headhunters specifically for educational jobs?
Don't give up - you have to stay calm, apply a million times to a million places, and something will come up.
last time I checked teh WORLD is in DEMAND for teachers!

Re: Something has got to give...I am ready to crack
I know some great schools (elementary) in Brooklyn - not a nasty neighborhood - Bay Ridge, that are hiring teachers constantly.
Just some suggestions:
St. Francis Cabrini St. Anslem (my whole family went there) St. Finbar's St. Ephrem's Our Lady of Angels Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Definitely worth checking out...

I know you don't want Brooklyn, but what about the Queens/Nassau border. it will still be NYC schools, but it will be closer to your home at least.
with the NYCBOE it's all about tenure- you will be stuck where no one else wants to go, until somone newer than you comes along and you get to 'move up' they is also more demand for specific subject area. do you have an area of specialization? FBIL is a teacher at a school in Manhattan, so I could ask him, but it would definitely be in NYC, not LI.
head up young person!

Kath,
As hard as it is, try to stay positive. My sister is a teacher in South Ozone Park and she hates her school! She has been trying to get out for a long time (I actually asked about a position for you and she told me that she wouldn't send her worst enemy there!). Just keep searching... something will come along. There are some Catholic schools in Queens you could try.
All I can offer you are

I don't know where you are interested in teaching but I just heard an announcement on the radio that Longwood SD is hiring.

I understand exactly what you are going though. It is hard to get a job on LI, but be persistent and it will pay off. This year was really rough for LI schools in general with the budget problems, but apply to every job and it will work. Did you go to school on LI?? Almost all of the teachers in my district graduated from there. I'll let you know if I hear of anything in my district.
