Something I am curious about...

Religion and government seems to be a big topic. So I am just curious how people feel about this...

What do you think about VOTING in a religious place - Such as having polls in Churches or Temples? Do you have an issue with this or is it just a space to hold voting?

Re: Something I am curious about...

Considering most of the news organizations are saying that most people voted 'on moral values' it's hard to say if we should be allowed to vote in religious venues.

Politics and Religion are two extremely volitile topics. I just don't see how bringing them together could be a positive thing.

Re: Something I am curious about...

i voted in a synagogue. i'm very against religion and politics being mixed. but i never even thought to be annoyed or upset that i was voting at a religious institution. i don't think it matters. it's a public space that was convenient.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I was just curious what if people had an issue with this - Yesterday DH and I voted at Grace Bible Church - we had to wait over 1 hour to vote - while waiting in the hallways there were tons of bulleting boards with church messages, bible messages, letters from troops in Iraq who were member of the church etc. Just wondered how people felt about being assigned to vote in a church or temple.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I imagine in some areas religious places are the only place large enough to handle the volume of people voting with out disrupting schools or other places of businesses during the week.

Re: Something I am curious about...

Christine I agree with this - but for example we have an elementary school right down the block that was not being used and was a bigger space - To me it was just a polling place and it didn't make a difference to me in any way - BUT there were people around us in line who said they were uncomfortable with the surroundings and even heard a comment that one girl's mother refused to vote because it was in a church and she was uncomfortable with that.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I don't know then. I can't imagine not exercising my right to vote so I would be the same as you...it's a polling place.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I voted at a church and did not give it a second thought. I just assumed that in my neighboorhood (Washington Heights) that it was the only place with the ability to handle the numbers.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I never thought about it - to tell you the truth. I don't think they should be mixed as far as decision making but for elections for me it would be another place to hold the voting - and nothing more.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I never thought about it before, but now that you mention it I don't think polling places should be within religious institutions. I know the Jewish side of my family would not enter a church because of their religious beliefs, so they would be prohibited from voting if that were the case in their district, which is unfair.

Re: Something I am curious about...

I just think you should never talk about those two topics, it leads to a lot of anger and fighting, I keep my mouth shut on those
