Songs for DJ to play?

Songs for DJ to play?

Ok, I have a question and Im getting mixed reviews from those I've heard from. We would like to play a very large part in picking most of the songs our DJ plays. I have heard from friends/family some DJ's like the freedom to 'feel ' the crowd and get annoyed at demanding requests from bride/groom. How many of you are being VERY specific about song selections( outside of the cake cutting, entranse, first dance etc...) I feel like it is our day and the music we pick is part of our 'style'...am I wrong?

My brother is a DJ and told me that he gets annoyed by requests from people who want you to play songs that are not appropriate and kill the party. At weddings people want to dance and party, so while 92.3& 104.3 music are good for listening at home and in the car, they might not be the best choice for a wedding. I think that it is your day and you should make a list of what you want to hear. I am, whether my brother approves or not!!! I'm actually more concerned with my list of what I don't want played!

And if the DJs get annoyed, too bad. You are paying them to be there for YOU!

My family had some issues about us picking too much of the music too. We ended up picking some of it, but not too much, so that the DJ gets a feeling of what we like and then can go from there. You have to think that these DJs are professionals and know how to read a crowd.

Have you booked a DJ yet?

We have the option to give a list to our DJ of songs we definitely would like to hear. I guess I don't think you should decide like 100% of what he's playing, but give him some lee-way on what he plays.

Our DJ took a list of all the Bands and music we liked. He is going to mix that into all of the other music.

You have a right to decide what you want played.....but a pro DJ should def. FEEL the crowd. He should be asking you for requests.

Hey girls, With whom ever you choose-just make sure that what ever songs, special requests or anything else of importance to you for your special day is put on the contract! They have a contract to cover their buts, you should make sure that they know all YOUR needs in writing as well. I unfortunatly learned the hard way. Good Luck!!

I don't want to choose it all, just all the 'special' songs of course. There are like 5 songs I'd like played, so far. But I want the DJ to keep things moving. Otherwise I would DJ myself with my iPod and some speakers.

I agree and I thank you all for the responses. We don't want 100% control but more then some people feel is needed. We feel that we know the crowd better then the DJ does. The last two family weddings we went to, the DJ was good, crowd danced, but we all felt atferwards that the songs were not that great...same things over and over, and at the last the bride was fuming about it...this DJ played 6 Billy Joel songs and she requested one during dinner? So anyway, Im concerned music is a huge part of the day. I think requests from guests should be played( in moderation of course) and yes I trust our DJ ( a friend....but not that close of a friend) This is one of the things that worries me the most about the wedding( wow, if only all my problems were like this!)

I didn't know what songs I wanted when I signed my contract, but he gave me a sheet that I had to write what I wanted, absolutely did not want and a list of all my special songs. I don't want toooo much but from the list he gets an idea for what I want to hear.

it does depend on the DJ....and some songs you pick might not fit the mood. We are making a list of songs we like so that he can get a feel of what we like....certain songs are tagged as 'MUST PLAY' but we are giving him a lot of freedom. We are keeping the slow songs to a minimum as we want our wedding to be more like a party

You should look into Music By Michael. he has a password protected section of his website where you can access his database of songs, choose what you want on your play and do not play lists, make special requests, notes, et.

Re: Songs for DJ to play?

Maybe what I'm thinking isin't that overboard? I know that we want more of a 'party' feeling, just want to be sure they play what we like and not what they like, which is what I hear happens..Ok heres the bottom line....how many songs do you think( without the first dane, entrance, mother/son etc) will be played and If I say I want say 20 songs played definatly..is that too much?

Re: Songs for DJ to play?

i feel that since you knwo who you are inviting to your wedding you should know what types of things to play. i picked something for everyone at my wedding and was promised that my d.j wouldnt play anything but my songs well that wasnt the case. on my video you will see a packed dance floor with a tune i played them my d.j got creative and played what he wanted and ruined the mood. i hated my d.j and mc and would never have used them again. i think you should insist on hearing hwat you want

Re: Songs for DJ to play?

i honestly would request as much as possible because i think they played maybe 8 of the songs i wanted excluding the important ones.

Re: Songs for DJ to play?

About 1/2 of our guests will be from Ireland so we are going to make a list of songs that are either irish or are songs that one would hear at a wedding in Ireland. So with those, we'll ask for certain songs to be played. Then we'll say 'play some fast songs by Elton John and Billy Joel and some New Order and Depeche Mode' and then we'll want some 50's -70's music played..'the standards'.
These DJ's shouldn't get upset if brides and grooms want to ask for specific songs. I can understand giving the DJ leeway - after all it's their job to know what to play but you're paying them - you should be able to tell them what you want without them being upset.
I'm sure you can come up with some 'middle ground' == if you like a particular type of music ie: country or swing or new wave, tell him and tell him the 'must have' songs and maybe he'll suggest the others...

Good luck!
