Just out of curiosity......most people say 'and guest' as a courtesy to all adults invited (usually to all people over 18 or 21).
Do you think people should only bring a guest if they are serious with someone, or do you think they should bring whoever they want.
I invited all people over 18 with a guest, even if they are not seeing anyone. I don't know how I would react if they brought just anyone. Although, if I didn't want them to bring just anyone, then I shouldn't have told them to bring a guest. hmmmmm....

Re: Sort of spinoff--about 'and guest'
Yea, I did the same thing. Everyone over 18 with guest. And for the most part 'and guest' will not be anyone serious for a good 80 percent of the 'guests.' That's alright, though, for me because if it helps people relax, have fun, and enjoy themselves during the wedding then I say they can bring whomever they want.

Re: Sort of spinoff--about 'and guest'
I've been invited to weddings with a guest (when I was single) and didn't bring someone unless I was dating. I wouldn't want to 'drag' someone to a wedding with me.... it's a personal preference.

I invited everyone with a guest even if someone told us they wouldn't bring one. I think if is someone's preference whether to bring someone or not. I hated when I wasn't invited to a wedding my FH was invited when we were dating for a year or more. I feel that I am throwing this party & everyone should have a good time and if bringing a guest will do that I am all the more for it..I actually didn't even think twice about it, I just hope about 75 people don't come..cross your fingers for me

I gave everyone an opportunity to bring along a guest, even the toddlers that I invited. Just kidding. I'm not even having kids at my wedding. But seriously, I put 'and guest' for all the adults, even if they are single. Some people are bringing friends of theirs, rather than significant others... we really needed the people anyway.

We did it on a case by case basis. If they are dating someone, or they do not know a single soul at the wedding....then they were able to bring someone.

We invited anyon over 18 with aguest as long as we knew they were in a relationship. IMO, inviting with a guest is a courtesy, and the people invited should exhibit the same courtesy by bringing someone that they are in a relationship with, not juts someone to fill the chair.

There are only about a handful of people that were invited with 'guest' that aren't in relationships. Most others invited with someone, we have met them at some point and they are in relationships.

See, that's how I felt, but then I thought about it and here is a situation....
My sister and I went to my cousin's wedding and I went with FH and my sister didn't have a date. now we always get seated with our other cousins, who are all couples. So, my sister brought our friend (guy) because she felt that she would have more fun.
For her friends wedding, she was invited with a guest but didn't bring one to either wedding because she knew everyone she would be sitting with (the friends table) so she didn't want to have to entertain someone.
So I guess it's up to the person and what makes them comfortable.

Re: Sort of spinoff--about 'and guest'
My idea about this has changed over the last few months. I initially planned to invite all single adults with a date. My plan was call in advance and get the name of the person though. I did not want to write '& guest'.
However, our list grew to 265 with the '& guests' option so we are doing it on a case by case basis. We are inviting family and close friends (and maybe a few of FI's clients who are all married). Everyone will know someone at the wedding so FI has taken it upon himself to start asking his friends if they will have a guests (the single ones). Only one guy said he would bring his new girlfriend (assuming they are together then) I have not asked my friends but did have one woman (who I was not planning to invite at all) tell me she would be fine to come alone (and she is married ).
My good friend/hair stylist did not allow dates at her wedding and suggested I cut our list in the same way. She said she did not want the 'flavor of the month' to be in her wedding photos.
She invited only married or engaged couples and her rationale was that she wanted only seriously committed people to witness their committment. Her cut off point was married or engaged.
I asked her about it and used the example of people dating for 2 - 4 years but not engaged or married. She said if they are adults (25 & over) & have been dating for 4 years but are not engaged, they need to break up.
Interestingly enough, I know single people that attended her wedding and since they pretty much all knew each other, it was not like anyone was the odd ball out as far as dancing and not having anyone to talk to all night.
I had two friends call me in June/July to say they broke up with boyfriends. One is a 4 year 'relationship' but not what she would call serious on any level and the other is a guy that I never met in the year or so they dated. I was not looking forward to either of these men being at the wedding so it helped me out a ton to get those calls. I did not want the wedding to turn into a 'Meet & Greet' for total strangers.
Not that inviting engaged or married guests means they won't cancel or break up though. Someone posted that her aunt/uncle split and one did not come to the wedding because of it.

Re: Sort of spinoff--about 'and guest'
I personally think it should be up to the guest who has the option to bring a guest. I was annoyed when a friend of FH said he wants to bring his guy friend because his wife couldn't make it. But then I realized we were pushing to make our minimum, so I didn't argue, LOL
