So...today, I taught one of my third grade classes.....
what superfluous information is. I mean, seriously, they offer the most ridiculous information to me at the most inappropriate times! So we drilled the defiinition of superfluous information in their heads and basically, not to offer any until the end of class when we have discussion time. The mind of a child MUST run wild! It was just cute having them try to pronounce the word, then explain in their own words. They all got it, too, that's the best part

It's like, un-needed, excess information.

Too funny Rachel...I know just what you mean too. We can be in the middle of math and someone will raise their hand and say....do you know that last Friday I went to my grandma's and she was mad and then she said......
And I'm like, ok, but what exactly does this have to do with math.....
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

What prompted the conversation was this one, 'Um, I have a dog, and he likes to eat food, but sometimes he doesn't because, well, he just doesn't, and, and, and.....' HAHA. I always ask, 'Ok, now, can we tie that into music class? No? Ok, so then it's not the right time for this story, is it?' Haha.

Oh, Lori, I had the same talk with the 8th grade today, too! I got someone shouting in the middle of my lesson, 'I like to read!' So I said, 'Great! Be here at the beginning of your lunch period and you can read for 40 minutes!' Because this was AFTER the superfluous information discussion. Who's funny now? Heh? HEH???

Re: So...today, I taught one of my third grade classes.....
I try to confuse mine! It's a little game I like to play. Like, they know if their name is on the board, it means they're in trouble for something they were doing, but I didn't want to stop the lesson to deal with it. So, I'll call on one of them (that might be trailing off a little), with a suspiscious voice, then ask a question in a normal voice, and they look at me and say, 'Am I in trouble?' And I say, 'Now, if you KNOW you're not doing anything wrong, then you should KNOW whether or not you're in trouble, right?'
