South of France

Chicas,
Have any of you been to the South of France? We're going there for our honeymoon and trying to figure out the most efficient way of getting from the airport in Nice to Cannes and then from Cannes to St. Tropez IN HIGH SEASON. Ive heard renting a car and driving is simply not an option due to the horrific traffic.

Thanks!!!

i would NOT recommend the type of train we took... granted this was like 13 years ago... im sure there have been improvements... but the rooms were small and there were too many of us to a room

Re: South of France

i was in the south of france about 5 years ago (while i was studying abroad). it is amaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

we took the train each day to the different cities. we were stationed in Nice and spent each day in a different spot. I very much recommend Eze and Antibes (in addition to the traditional hot spots). the trains are fine! they're nicer than the LIRR - they're basically commuter trains.

i took a train from Barcelona to Nice to arrive there - that was a different train system.

eta: Nice and Cannes and St Tropez are all really close. I don't remember specifically, but we did each city in a day so i can't imagine we traveled for more than 2 hours to each place.

Re: South of France

I spent one day in the south of France and went to Nice, Villefranche and Monaco. It was AMAZING but extremely expensive, LOTS of walking (mostly uphill), and the local trains all had delays. We had to get from Nice to Villefranche to catch up with the cruise ship we had taken there, and the train was delayed by like 45 minutes. No one really seemed to care. Also, not sure if you have ever been to Europe/on European trains, but it's different from here b/c you have to get your ticket validated - meaning you buy a ticket from a machine and then you have to bring it to a validation machine to have the time/date stamp added to it (so you can't use it the next day or whatever). Most of the time I was on the train there weren't even conductors that collected tickets, but I wouldn't want to test it.

Didn't seem like there were many cars and when there were, it was more like in cobblestone street areas (sort of reminiscent of the Village or like Little Italy area).

HTH!
