I don't know about you girls, but I never liked this part of a wedding ceremony. And as far as I know, it's not necessary (I've only heard it said in movies and on tv, never in an actual wedding ceremony). The officiant I'm using is pretty much insisting on using this phrase and I'm a little uneasy about it. It might sound silly, but I just don't like it. Is anyone else using this phrase in your ceremony? Am I overreacting? TIA!

Haven't heard that at any of the weddings I've attended over the years. Only in the movies and on TV.
If in doubt, ask your officiant if they include this, and just ask them to not say it. It is not legally required.

Re: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace?
Thanks girls. Originally, the officiant had sent me a copy of the standard ceremony he performs and asked me to make any changes I wanted. So I emailed him back just asking him to take that part out. He said, it has to stay in so he can't take it out. I'm confused because like I said, I've never heard it in a ceremony before.
I guess I'll press the issue and ask why he's leaving it in.

Thank you for saying that. I feel the same way but I was starting to think I was overreacting!

Thank you! I feel better just knowing it's not just me! I'm going to try my best to have this taken out of the ceremony.

Re: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace?
We had it said in our ceremony. Our priest said that it is standard. He even told us a story where a wedding was being preformed and someone stopped the wedding stating that the groom was married. They had to what for the ceremony to continue, while the evidence of his previous marriage was being sent to the church. It turned out he was married when in college, but didn't think anything of it because it was so long ago and they never really acted as though they were married (I think they were drunk) It had to be annulled bofore he could get married again. IMO, I don't think it is really that bad to say.

the only part of a wedding cermony that has to be said is the pronouncement - I do' have the exact wording that my officiant used, but it is the part where they say, blah blah blah, state of NY, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

It was said at our ceremony too-its almost always said-some priests ask it in a different manner tho and not in that wording. No big deal-didnt bother me b/c there was no reason for anyone to say anything

YOU CAN ASK THE PRIEST NOT TO INCLUDE IT ... IT DOES SOUND CHEESY ... LOL IF SOMEONE HAS A PROB WITH THE WEDDING HAPPENING THEM THEY SHOULDNT BE THERE THATS HOW I SEE IT

I think most priests word it differently but I've been to weddings where they exclude it alltogether -- IMO I don't think it's necessary to even say it
