Yes definitely...especially if you know that person isn't sure who they are going to bring. Only if they are actually with someone, engaged or seriously dating would I put the persons name.
However, if the person responds with their 'guests' name, I would put that persons name on the place card...

Right i thought so. But on the outside envelope it should be addressed to the actual person only right?

Hmmm... i'm not sure about that one. My fiance was recently invited to a wedding and I think it said Mr. E.V. & guest on the outer and inner envelope. I added my name on the response card so they had both our names on the place card. I would put & guest on the outer... If you were invited say... Mr. EV & family... i would put that on the outer, and then list the peoples names who are invited on the inner envelope so there is no confusion...this is all so confusing!!

usually the 'and guest' and family part goes on the inner. Some do put it on the outer so its not the end of the world if you do. ALso some invitations dont have inner envelope so it has to go on outside, such as pocketfolds so if youve seen it on the outside many times its bc of this. I had boxed invitations so had to put and guest on the outside

That would have seriously IRKED me... i was a little annoyed that he was & guested on the invitation considering we had been together almost 2 years!!!! Like did they think he'd bring someone else????

i was 'and guested on an invite too' the funny thing is we were engaged and it was RIGHT before the wedding. Infact the event we got an invite for was for after our wedding. So i know the feeling, the placecard had our names though

yeah thats why the etiquette for this has changed to make changes for the fact that alot of invites now dont have inner envelopes. But normally if it does have an inner envelope you put and guest on the inner. But ive seen it done both ways, sometimes a person just doesnt know and its fine, not like i think 'oh no they shouldn't have done this' although im sure some ppl would hahaha

This happened to me too...after we were married we rec'd a STD for a friend's wedding and it was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur So-and So...but my DH's name is Arnie (the people getting married were at our wedding)! But to answer the orogonal post...it is definitely appropriate to put 'and guest' on the inside envelopes.

Re: speaking of and guest....
Friend of my FH from work (who i never met) invited us to his wedding and on the outside envelope it said Mr. A. V and on the inside envelope it said and guest. I think this is the proper way to do it.
