Speaking of college, what was your major?

Original post by KitWisdom

Bonus question: Do you actually use it now at the job you’re at, lol?

I was an English major, so yes for that—except I was a Creative Writing concentration. Humph

Sociology major w/ criminology minor
What do I do now?
I'm a child abuse investigator...guess it kind of is a perfect fit

that sounds very interesting. and is probably so rewarding when you are able ot help abused children. How did you get a job like that... if you dont mind me asking? I mean I thought people who worked in that field had to be social workers.

Just interested because I graduated with a Psych degree- minor Forensic Psych and that would be a wonderful job to have.

I'm always glad when people ask so no problem! I work for NYC Children's Services (ACS) I LOOOVE my job. Ensuring the safety and future of the children and families I serve is a great feeling....however the bureaucracy of working in a large agency can be overwhelming at times

The only qualifications you need is a bachelors with 12 (i think) credits in a social science...so you should be fine. They are always hiring b/c (i'm not sugar coating) the job is very stressful with long hours...i haven't made it home before 10pm all this week....but it's amazing experience. If you can make it here anyone will hire you if you chose to move on, plus there is alot of room for movement w/in the agency itself.

Go to www.nyc.gov/html/acs/ to look up positions i'm a 'Child Protective Specialist'....but there are plenty of jobs not just doing what I do.

Any questions FM me...sorry so long ladies!

ETA: Sorry I just realized that you may want to work in LI, i'm not sure about how to apply with them but I do know that it appears to be less work & stress than NYC...but that's looking from the outside in

thank you sooo much for the info. Before I started majoring in Psych I was going to major in Sociology. but the professor i had for my first intro class turned me off from it soo much- i hated him. But I was contemplating going for my masters in either Foresnic Psych or Social Work. But then decided to go for Education. But hey its hard getting a teaching job in LI. So I should def check your agency out. Thank you sooo much for the info. I appreciate it. I love working wiht children and helping them so that seems like such a perfect start at helping!
