maybe i'm just a total control freak but music is really important to FH and i. pretty much i'm already filling my itunes with playlists for the different areas of the wedding.
like today...i already planned out my cocktail music..lol
how much control do DJ's give you? i'm afraid by the time my wedding date comes around i'll already have the whole thing laid out and i just want to give him my laptop and be like 'here' with a set of instructions...
i'm so bad.

Re: Speaking of DJ's
if you have itunes you can look under music and then imix's...and you can search for like 'dinner music' or 'engagement party' to give you some ideas.
also under itunes essentials they have a lot of great compilations.
that's all i'm doing and then dragging and dropping the 30 second clips into different playlists.

I think thats great! I am sure the DJ will appreciate that you know what you want! They probably would rather that than someone who has no idea what they want.

Im gonna have to disagree with this... I really think aside from certian songs to be played/not to be played here n there, you shouldnt tell the dj exactly what to play... Its kinda like tellin em how to do their job... I know most people dont like to be told how to do their job... Dj's know what songs will flow nicely together and blend into one another... I actually think you are making their job harder... but thats just my opinion

agree...but u can also tell the dj what songs u do not want such as like the chicken dance cha cha slide...
and also give him a tiny list of a few of your favorites that you would like to hear!

Re: Speaking of DJ's
That just seems like a lot of extra work! I'm going to have my general list of songs I def want played and songs I def do not want played. I'll pretty much leave it up to the DJ tho.

i think that's kind of funny but i guess i have to put myself in their shoes...
oh well maybe i'll save some money this way..lol. i just don't want my music to be like everyone else's ya know? music is what brought my FH and i together so its super crucial...i think it would be harder to come up with a list of songs i didn't like since there are a lot.

I can see your side and the DJs side as well. Did you pick your DJ yet?

no..i live in NC and I just got engaged Christmas so I haven't been up to NY yet to scope anyone out..but i'm guessing this will be a dealbreaker for a lot of them. i'll just have to find the right DJ that is willing to work with me.

Yea thats exactly what you gotta do. If its important to you to have the music that you picked out already and they are offended then they are not worth it. Its more important to be completely comfortable with them so that you wont have any problems. Im sure there are excellent DJs out there that will be happy to work with you on your list. Good luck!!

i have seen it over the yrs from the dj's POV just because Fh was a dj and we both have friends that dj... Ive heard that complaint time and time again... If you tell them you want maybe more 'non-traditional' music... I'm sure they have enough experience and would know what this means... Just dont make it like... okay 1st you play this, then this, and this... basically, dont plan their whole set... Let THEM show you what they can do

haha no no no maybe i didn't explain it enough. i don't care what order any of it is played in...but i wanted to obvi pick our first dance song, garter songs (if we decide to do it), cake cutting song, cocktail hour music (i'm either going with motown for outdoors or another set list if it rains), father/daughter song, mother/son, ceremony music....etc.
as far as the whole reception..i have a few dedications i want to do and i'll prob give a list of our fave dance/slow songs and then they can pick whatever besides those.
as far as dinner music i want a certain vibe..but i'm sure they will go over all of this with me beforehand right?
i've never booked a DJ for anything so i don't really know how it works...

We like our music too but, we are just gonna give the dj an idea of what we want and let them take care of it. After all they are the professionals.

Re: Speaking of DJ's
when i went to speak to a dj, they give you a book and you fill out all the songs that you want played besides the usual first dance, father/daughter, mother/son. he said you can put a few songs that you want played, or you can write down front and back of the page exactly what songs you want played. then theres a different section that asks if you want to make any dedications, and if you do, what song youll be using etc. they basically have an outline of how it will go, and you fill in the songs you must have and they take it from there.

Re: Speaking of DJ's
You can give them a list of dinner music, a do not play list, a do play list... And, you can tell them that you want oldies, classic, and r&b and tell them to mix it up. They usually try to accomadate to your liking...
