Speaking of Groom's Cake - need ideas

Speaking of Groom's Cake - need ideas

I want something outrageous for FH's groom cake. I want something like the armadillo in Steel Magnolias.

FH wants ice cream. I have to call Carvel to see what they can do, but in the meantime, what can you think of? I want FUNNY. I want everyone to say, WOW!!!

Ok, some details on FH:
--Met fan though disgusted with them (and I'm a Yankee fan)
--Runner
--Computer programmer
--Kind of shy
--Comes from BIG family (he's 7th of 8 kids and last to get hitched)
--Loves to fish but I am an animal rights person so I don't think this is a good idea (ETA this piece)

I was thinking a Yankee cake, as a joke, but I want something in a funny shape I think. Can you even do that with ice cream? I don't know...

Me either - do you think it would cost that much!? We are only having about 30 or so people at the RD, which is where I want to serve it...

A couple of places that i contacted told me between 6 - 7 pp. I am also having 30 people at the rehersal and didn't want to spend 210 on a cake.

Alot of places do that picture cake thing? My FH loves ice cream cakes, so maybe I will do one of these and put the car on top.

I spent $150 on FI cake and it serves 40 people (still have at least 4 peices left).

Am I the only one who doesn't know what a Groom's cake is? They get one for themselves? Is it at the wedding with the bridal cake?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Not a stupid question at all! It's a Southern tradition I think.

I've read several reasons why people started having both cakes, but in my opinion in most cases the poor groom isn't the center of attention, and for my FH, I want him to have something all his own.

You can server it at the reception alongside the wedding cake, or at the RD. I've heard of both. I guess grooms' cakes used to be chocolate to contrast the whiteness of the wedding cake, but we are having a chocolate wedding cake anyway (with white frosting).

You don't have to have one by any means. It's not overly common in NY, I think it's just starting to really take off.

But for me, I NEVER need an excuse to have more cake.

ETA I don't know who generally buys it. I told FMIL I'd like to get it for the RD because I know her sense of imagination and her creativity do not come anywhere close to what I have in mind. Her outrageous idea is just having a cake in general.

StacyandJohn-
Where did you get your cake?
6/7 $a person is too much for me!

Ilona from Sugar Sugar is making me a cake of a fisherman standing on a jetty with water and fish swirling around him! She is $6 pp and delivers from Suffolk to Nassau. Very nice lady who is open to suggestions!

Re: Speaking of Groom's Cake - need ideas

There are too many cakes ont his board tonight. I am starving now. We are getting a grooms cake and serving it at the RD. I think the tradition however, is to give the guests a piece of it as they leave the reception and the single girls are supposed to put it under their pillow (boxed of course) for good luck in the love department. I am surprising FH with this though at the RD.
