Speaking of insects in food..

I spent about an hour going through all my pastas, rice and flour etc..

I went to cook couscous for dinner tonight, I opened the box and it was filled with little brown WORMS!

So I opened a box of mac and cheese...WORMS!

So I opened another box of pasta and broccoli... WORMS!!!

So we had steak and broccoli for dinner. Then I opened every single box in my cabinets. I poured everything out into zip lock bags and studied them. I cant tell you how much I had to throw out!!!

Amy....We had this happen to us over the summer.....it was so gross.

We didnt know why we had these bugs in our house....we saw little flying bugs, then saw wormy like things on our kitchen ceiling and then we tracked it down to a bag of noodles we bought but they spread to everything starchy in our cabinets!!!!

We tossed EVERYTHING....steamed cleaned and disinfected the cabinets and now when we buy starchy type food they IMMEDIATELY go into ziploc bags!

If we get something with bugs again, they are contained into the one plastic bag not all over the cabinet!

We keep a lot of pastas and things like that in the fridge because when I lived with my parents that would happen from time to time and that is what my mom started doing. I keep my bird's food in the freezer too. That was always the first thing that it would happen to.

This happened to a family I babysat for. They needed an exterminator.. because she just couldnt deal with the idea that the worms.. might still be there. Yuck!

You can thank SuperKat for what I'm about to tell you. Because I was totally grossed out by them and found out that they're totally normal.

They're grain beetles and they are no indication of bad quality or anything. You'll find them in pasta, birdseed, even flour.

The solution? Bay leaves if you can believe it. I put some all around my pantry and in my flour bag and no more grain beetles.

Flour does not take on the flavor of the bay leaf. I don't know what it would do to pasta though. These bugs can get into sealed boxes even, so maybe mason jars would be best (I have all my baking stuff in mason jars anyway).

Seriously

Ziplocks are good, but airtight containers are better. Somehow (I have no idea) our bugs were able to get into sealed bags (like bags of pasta), so if you want to be extra sure, I'd go out and buy some. We use ones like this:

I have these...they work really well and they're not too big so they don't take up very much counter space.

Welcome. Oh and by the way, their eggs can be in the pasta without you knowing it, so that's probably how they get in sealed containers.

I like those mason jars too. I got mine from BB&B but they're clear so I can see at a glance what's in them.

my parents use to get them sometimes... not in everything but they would sometimes get the worms, sometimes get the moths....

what you should do is take the plastic bag out , look at the bottom, Then take the bag(closed or holding closed at the top and turn it upside down to check for bug webbings in the bottom
