Is anyone having a 'black tie optional' or 'formal attire' wedding? I'm curious about what people's thoughts are on this. I feel weird putting something like that on the invites, but my parents are sort of old-school in that regard. Is anyone out there dealing with this too?
Thanks!

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
We aren't putting anything on the invitation, but we also aren't getting outside feedback that we should. I am kinda assuming that people know what to wear to a wedding, and if they don't then they will look stupid. I can't be bothered lol

I personally think its kind of rude to tell people what to wear.
I think most of my guests know how to dress for the occasion, and honestly, I mostly just care about what i wear.

ITA. I went to a wedding in CT recently and the invite said, 'Semi-Formal Attire.' I wore a short black dress and I fit in perfectly.
My only issue with not putting it on the invites is my OOT guests from overseas. I'm afraid they'll either overdo it completely or the total opposite. Oh well, not much I can do about that.

Please noone kill me for saying this:
I am putting black tie optional on invites. 2 Reasons:
1) I am setting the mood for the event. Remember, my theme is Godfather meets Old Hollywood meets modern sophisication. So I really would prefer to see my guest fully decked out. Plus my cousins did this and no one complained at all.
2) There are some people on FH's side that simply feel its ok to wear to a button down and khakis to a wedding. Or jeans. I personally feel that for a wedding a suit is more suitable.
Most of the weddings I have been too have had 'a dress code'. I really don't mind it at all. It provides guidence for me when I'm shopping for a dress for a wedding or dressing FH.

I am hoping that our guests know how to dress for a wedding.......if not, they will look silly and stand out, not me.

Ditto. Most people know how to dress appropriately for this. Others are going to wear whatever they want regardless of what's written on the invite. We won't be writing anything on it.

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
nope, my family knows what to wear.....and honestly, if i got an invite that said 'black tie optional' i still wouldn't make FH wear a tux, its just another cost for a wedding i don't need to take on.

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
Im not, I think my guest will all dress,- at my e-party everyone was dressed nice and it was very informal, my brother and sister went to a wedding and the men had to rent tuxedos I think unless you want all the men in tuxedos you don't have to put formal attire, I guess it could not hurt to add on the bottom!

That's exactly why I feel like it's awkward to put it on there. I just don't know how to tell my parents how I feel b/c in the end I think it might lose this battle.

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
omg my friend was over the other day and he was BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISHING bout a wedding he had to attend. 'black tie' he had to go out and rent a tux for 200$... so his date had to get a niceeeeeeeeee dress... plus gift..plus hotel for ht enight... they spent well over 1,000$ just to ATTEND the wedding.
i personallly do not think its right to have ur guests go out n rent a tux . but thats my opinion...

don't kill me too for agreeing!
we have a lot of out of towners that are flying over to attend to our wedding and they need guidance on what to wear. i went to my friends wedding (who invited the same people that i plan to invite) and they did not specify what the dress code is that they just came in jeans! This is apparently, an acceptable outfit to wear where they came from. They were uncomfortable at the beginning because they felt out of place but towards the end they got over it and enjoyed the party.
my case here is... there is definitely nothing wrong with stating the dress code specially for the OOT that may not have an idea on what is 'proper' or not for the wedding.

i did black tie optional/semi-formal on my invitations. i want everyone to dress nice. i dont want people showing up in khakis and a polo. plus im young and a lot of my friends are immature and i want them to know that they have to dress appropriate for the ocassion. o n FFIL came to engagement party in jeans and i was sooo pi$$ed. Maybe he'll get the hint this time lol

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
I opted not to since its a sat evening wedding at a nice place I figured everyone would know whats appropriate, but my moms best friend freaked and insisted everyone should put 'black tie optional'. I don't think its a big deal either way. JMO

I'm w/Peaches, I am stating its black tie optional / formal. It would just pi$$ me off if ppl, and yes lots of ppl do it, came to my wedding in a sun dress and a button down w/khakis. So to avoid that annoying situation I am stating it on the invite. I did this for my e-party (semi-formal) i'll let you guys know how well it did or did not work!

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
I got a little worried since I have a day wedding, But I put reception to follow so they know it is still the traditional wedding. And they can google WM to see it's not a small place.

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
I put Black Tie.
Not optional....not preferred.... just as it is.
I wanted my wedding to be formal. And I just don't trust people to know how formal an affair is just by the invitation. More then half of the men wore Tuxedos and the ladies were in gowns. I love getting dressed up for a wedding.... to me it adds to the excitement of the event ... so I couldn't imagine not having mine black tie and I don't think my guests would have expected less.... kwim?
Here is the proof lol!

Re: specifying a category of wedding attire?
I don't really plan on putting anything on the invite indicating dress but since it's at night I think people will dress appropriately. At least most of them.
BUT I wanted to share a funny story about this... I have relatives who are SUPER religious and live down south, we got an invitation to one of their weddings and the dress code card was RIDICULOUS. For women it said no skirts above the knee, sleeves are necessary (in FLORIDA), at least to the elbow, high neck, covered back, all this craziness. My mother was fuming, and sent the dress code card back with her 'no' response. So I think they got the hint, the next two weddings from that family had nothing like that included in the invite.
ETA: Didn't mean to suggest that day weddings don't require appropriate clothing, lol, just that night may be more formal to most.
