I just have a question about toasts. Have you ever been to a wedding where both fathers give a speech? My parents are paying for the reception, and FH wants his dad to be able to give a speech too. I told him that usually the grooms parents speak at the RD if they want to. But now I feel like I'm being a b*tch about it. I also don't want to have to sit through all these speeches. Opinions?

Re: speeches
Both my dad and my FFIL want to give a speech...plus we have 2 BM and 2 MOH! PLUS, my cousin/bridesmaid has had one in the works for years.
So my banquet manager suggested that the fathers give any speeches they want during dinner, so it doesn't cut time off from anything else.

Re: speeches
Typically only the bride's father speaks. I have never been to a wedding where the Groom's father says a speech. Is there a reason he wants his father to speak? Especially since he is not paying for the wedding I dont see why his father should have a speech, JMO.
Also, its def going to be too many speeches bc the Best man and the Maid of honor also have a speech.

He just wants him to have the 'option' I guess not wanting to leave him out? I just feel like it's not their party, not to sound like a total witch, they are throwing the RD thats what they are hosting, and the hosts are the ones to speak. But its kind of starting a fight between us because I just feel like its inappropriate, and he feels like I'm trying to exclude his parents.

Re: speeches
My father is not outspoken at all so I never asked to give a speech anyways, and Dh dad never took to iniciative...so only the BM and MOH gave a speech.
IMO I dont think you should get upset if his dad gives a speech or not bc I dont think a speech is based on who is paying for what...he might just wants to express his feelings...and that's priceless.

Re: speeches
Who is doing the Rehersal Dinner? Typically its the Groom's father who gives the speech that night and the brides that does it the night of the wedding...
My dad was asked by my FIL's to give a speech at the engagement party they threw for us because they weren't comfortable speaking so I guess it's whatever YOU are comfortable with...

Re: speeches
IMHO if it's causing so much stress for the two of you, let him speak. In our wedding my mom, dad, his mom and sister and BM and MOH made a speach and it didn't ruin anything. They love you and want to give you well wishes. Don't let it get to you.

Re: speeches
Thanks guys! You're totally right, if he wants to speak, its not something negative and I shouldn't look at it that way. :) I REALLY appreciate it!

I am going through the SAME THING! FH is insisting that his dad give a speech, even though my parents are the ones contributing the most. I don't know what t do about this. I am thinking of allowing them both to speak, but giving everyone a time limit! I like the idea of having his dad speak during dinner, and then maybe my dad can speak at the end of the night to kind of say thanks for coming to everyone?

Both Dh and I paid for our own wedding, and I would not take away from our parents giving a speech. (not that they did but anyhow) give him lets say 5 minutes. That;s not going to take anything away from you.
It's just simple speech. Dont wrap yourself around...whos paying and whos not!
