nothing is really mandatory... We gave a small thanks for coming speech and also added in details about the wedding date and place.

we didn't give one at ours...FHs dad gave a speech to congratulate us and also to thank ppl for coming.

You dont have to its up to you. DH gave a speech to thank everybody for coming, but then right after he dedicated the speech to his friend lol his friend was the one who was asking me what i thought of DH the night i met dh, and gave DH the ok to talk to me so he thanked him for having the b*lls to talk to me when he couldn't. It was funny and sweet

Its really up to you....i think it would be nice though. it is always nice to thank your guests for coming...it can be short and sweet.

my father said a speech first and then we just thanked our parents and everyone for coming. and announced our wedding date and location.
