New York City police investigated packages at the Metrotech Center in Brooklyn Friday after officials said there was a probe of UPS cargo planes with packages from Yemen that landed at the Philadelphia and Newark airports.
Two packages from Yemen that had been routed through Kennedy Airport were cleared in Brooklyn, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. The packages appeared to contain bank receipts, Kelly said.
An official told The Associated Press that the United States is investigating whether the packages were a dry run for a mail bomb plot.
Kelly said the packages examined in Brooklyn were on a delivery truck bound for JPMorgan Chase.
Police had earlier received a report about a suspicious package in Long Island City.
Earlier in the U.K., officials discovered that a toner cartridge aboard a cargo plane had been manipulated and found wires attached to it and white powder, the AP reported.
A high-ranking government official told Newsday that the toner cartridge and wires had tested positive for explosives.
Kelly said the packages examined in Brooklyn did not contain any wires.
Two packages in Newark were removed from a cargo plane and scanned at a UPS facility, according to a transportation official. One contained paper and envelopes and did not pose a threat, the official said.
A government source said no threats were found on the Philadelphia plane.
The AP said that officials found a suspicious item on a cargo plane during a basic security screening process in the United Kingdom, according to a U.S. government official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.
