Spin off from LizD-Metpahn HS Should the kids be tried as adults?

Interesting article/editorial

I didn't write this but I feel the same way that the author does about the situation @ Mepham.

I shouldn't have written what you're about to read.
As a rule, journalists don't comment about news stories they're covering. We might lose our 'objectivity.' I agree with the principle, but as a human being (and in this case, as a Bellmore-Merrick resident), I believe it must be violated at times. This, for me, is one of those very few times.

At the Central High School District board meeting last Wednesday, I hoped, and even expected, to hear person after person send best wishes to the victims of the sex-abuse attacks allegedly carried out by three Mepham football players.
As it turned out, I heard relatively few people speak up for the victims in an audience of more than 700. One was a friend of a victim's parents, who read a moving statement from the boy's family. Another was a recent district resident. There were a handful of others who mentioned the victims as part of broader speeches. And, in fairness, the superintendent made strong comments supporting the victims.
By contrast, a number of people spoke about Mepham's academic achievements, its community-service record, its many National Merit commended students and semifinalists. Roone Arledge, the legendary TV sports-news executive, graduated from Mepham, one man said.
The speakers were met with thunderous applause, even standing ovations. The audience was a sea of maroon-and-gray sweatshirts, T-shirts and headbands. Many people wore 'Mepham Pride Is Alive' buttons. Some held big pro-Mepham signs.
Frankly, the board meeting seemed more like a Mepham pep rally than community forum. Mepham supporters were out in force, and they were working overtime to defend the school's image, which many said the media had destroyed. They had every right to stick up for their school, but as far as I'm concerned, they don't really need to, and certainly not with such a public display. Mepham will remain a great learning institution, with its reputation for academic excellence intact. The teachers are the same teachers. The students, minus a handful, are the same students.
No one in their right mind would think any less of the 1,200 good kids who attend Mepham because three of their classmates may be criminals. Aside from the intense, unwanted media attention, the tragedy hasn't touched the vast majority of students directly. They're still smart. They're still dedicated to their families and friends. They'll still go on to outstanding colleges.
Yes, Mepham High School and the overwhelming majority of its students will survive this ordeal.
Many people also defended Mepham principal John Didden, speaking of him as a great leader, a committed educator with decades of experience and an exemplary citizen. In short, a role model for us all.
Mr. Didden, however, doesn't need to be defended. I predict he won't lose his job, despite a few parents who have called on him to resign or be forced to resign because he reportedly knew, before camp, that one of the alleged assailants had threatened another player.
During the meeting, the school board pledged its full support for Mr. Didden. So did the Nassau County Principals Association, via a letter read by Kennedy High School principal Lorraine Poppe. And in a letter to all Central district residents last Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Caramore called on the community to support Mr. Didden.
Yes, principal John Didden will survive.
There were also those, primarily former Mepham football players, who came to speak on football coach Kevin McElroy's behalf. Some players' parents, including those of at least one victim, have called on coach McElroy to step down because, they charge, he failed to protect the three junior-varsity squad members from the attacks. The school board didn't throw its unequivocal support behind him last week. The way I see it, he might lose his coaching job, perhaps even his teaching position.
But 'coach Mac' will survive.
What about the three ninth-graders who were sexually assaulted by three bigger boys with a broomstick, pine cones and golf balls? Will they survive? They have no longstanding careers, no loyal legions to stand up for them.
If the allegations are true, they were forced to the ground and essentially raped. They screamed. As many as 15 other teammates may have watched and did nothing, according to one victim's attorney. How does anyone overcome such a horrifying, life-altering event?
The victims probably played Little League baseball or football or soccer, rode bikes through our quiet streets. Maybe they were in the Boy Scouts, maybe the Mepham band. They probably dreamed of achieving football glory someday, of winning a county championship, maybe going pro after brilliant college careers, as at least one Mepham graduate has already done. More likely, they were boys who just wanted to be liked, who just wanted to belong to something bigger than themselves, and they believed the football team was that something.
The victims' attorneys say the boys feel guilt because the football season was canceled. Imagine that, the victims feeling guilt. I don't believe they should feel that way. But what have we done to make them feel otherwise?
What have we, as a community, done to make them believe we care? That we support them? By the looks of last Wednesday's board meeting, our primary concern appears to be saving our reputation, which, to my mind, doesn't really need saving.
To preserve its image -- and a true sense of pride -- the Mepham community should reach out to the victims in meaningful ways. In this respect, candlelight vigils are better than pep rallies.

yes...there is not a b/w line btw being an adult and a child...these kids were senior members of the team and with that there is some responsibility to lead the team...and that is why they will be tried as adults

But see, that's where I'm on the fence... Yes, they are old enough to be responsible and SHOULD have known much better than to even think about doing what the did. On the other hand, 18 to me is still a kid. I remember being 17/18 and in college, and a COMPLETE nutcase. I did sooo many stupid things (but nothing even remotely CLOSE to what those kids did) and looking back I have learned a lot from it and am lucky to have made certain mistakes because I'm better off knowing now. At 18, you still have your whole life ahead of you. Of course I think what they did should be punished, but if they are tried as adults they will be put away for a VERY VERY long time. And that's sad, to me... they won't ever have the chance to lead a normal life. (Again, I feel like I am repeating myself, but I am not trying to make light of what happened, just being a bleeding-heart liberal right now!)

Yes. They knew what they were doing was wrong, wrong, wrong. They felt they could get away it with it through intimidation and the fact that they are jocks. They need to be taught (and so do others who do the same and it is never reported) that their behavior has consequences.

I really do feel badly for the boys who were attacked. They lost so very much here.

Lunatrek, will the boys who were abused be able to live a normal life after this? Maybe, with the proper help. But............. Just something to think about.

I don't think we have the right to learn lessons at the expense of others health and wellbeing. I would think way before the age of 18 you know that sodomy against another person with broomsticks, pinecones and golfballs is wrong and basically inhumane. I am not sure the victims of this crime feel there is a harsh enough punishement. If it was me or one of my kids, I know I would want these animals put away for as long as possible.

I graduated from Mepham...

It disgusts me to even think of what those poor 9th graders and their families are going through.
I think the CRIMINALS should most definitely be tried as adults.

Without a doubt they should be tried as adults. I don't care if they're under 18. They did not commit a crime of passion. They knew what they were doing was wrong. I'm sure they planned the events to happen the way it did. There was thought behind this.

What about the boys who got molested? What about their whole life being ahead of them? Now they have to live with this pain for the rest of their life. They are going to suffer forever, and they were the victims. As far as I'm concerned the criminals should suffer more than the victims. Let this be on their record. I don't give a crap. They destroyed people's lives, their lives should be destroyed as well.

You can't tell me that 16 and 17 year olds did not know that what they were doing was rape. If they were 11 or 12, I could see an argument of they didn't know what they were doing. but not boys that are 16 and 17.

I think they should definitely be tried as adults. They knew what they were doing was wrong. It was definitely pre-meditated. If they are tried as kids, the most they can get is juvenile hall til age 21 and then they are free(I believe this is what I read) and to me that is a slap on the wrist because they are already 17 & 18. I think some kind of precedent must be set, starting with these boys, that this hazing crap is unacceptable and punishible.
I feel extremely bad for the victims. They will never lead a normal life again. Their childhood is ruined because a group of boys who thought they were the S H I T, and who were supposed to be people they could look up to, raped, molested and sodomized them.
Those victims are taunted by others in the community.
I live in Merrick, and you can't go into anywhere here, laundromat, blockbuster, 7-11, without hearing about Mepham. It is very sad. Those victims will never be able to walk around in their own home town again, because of these jerks. People will always point a finger at them and say 'oh, thats the boy that was raped'.Therefore, I think they should suffer and be tried as adults.
