Let's say that same sex marriages are allowed. Is everyone ready to pay more taxes to cover the cost of paying federal and state benefits (i.e. social security) to these same-sex spouses?
Edited to say: Also, there will be increases in other areas, such as health insurance.

Re: Spin-off of the Same Sex Marriage Threads
What makes you think this will happen? Homosexuals pay the same taxes that we do and receive the same benefits that we do.
Turning your question around on you, even if it did create more taxes, do you think it is ok to deny rights to a minority so that the majority can save a few bucks?
I don't think this is an issue...homosexuals are less than 3% of the population adn that included those who do not want to get married and those who are 'in the closet'
but yes I am...equal rights should never be about money...
now ask me if I am ready to pay $160 BILLION ++++ to pay for a war that shouldn't have happened IMHO

Because a whole class of people will be eligible for benefits that previously were not entitled to them.

This isn't necessarily true. A lot of health insurance plans these days cover Domestic Partners. So just by being legally married won't jack up the taxes.

you pay more federal tax if you are married- the marriage penalty it is often called so the gov't would collect more money from those couples! How much of my money was used to take photos of freakin mars? I would rather it go to medical expenses instead.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Hear the sound of my wallet opening ! I will pay your share if you would like
Seriously the government is hiding behind the $ excuse - we all pay taxes to support things we might not support that others do.

Re: Spin-off of the Same Sex Marriage Threads
I'm sorry, I didn't answer my own question. I am being honest, so please don't attack me.
I believe if two people love each other, they should be allowed to be together and, in a perfect world, should be allowed to marry.
However, you know that insurance companies look for any excuse to increase their premiums and therefore health and life insurance premiums will spike. Taxes will probably not be as dramatic, but there will be an increase.
If allowing homosexual couples to marry is going to cost me my hard-earned money, I am not so sure I am for it.

I am confused, I thought all of these benefits were paid for out of our salaries (i.e. ss, and health insurance). The cost of insuring an extra person is also figured into the calculation usually. And the remainder of health insurance costs would be picked up by the corporation where one of the people is employed. Who cares if the partner is male or female...

If more people are insured, the cost of insuring them will increase and will ultimately come out of our pockets (whether it be increased premiums or cost-cutting measures, like diminished raises or downsizing). Any increased costs will fall ultimately upon the taxpayers/employees.

Mary -
You are totally allowed to your opinion! I give snaps to anyone who does so.
I am talking in circles here - But what is all of those people decide to enter into hetro marriages? Would their be all this talk of banning for $ reasons then -it is still the same amount of people - same amount of coverage.

I believe that has been phased out - the deduction for a married couple is now the same as the deduction for two single people. (which I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, is where the 'marriage tax' came from - you may end up paying a bit more because with more salary you're in a higher tax bracket)

Re: Spin-off of the Same Sex Marriage Threads
you're assuming that they currently have no insurance, which seems like a false assuption.
Plenty of companies offer domestic partner benefits and even if they can't be on their partner's plan, they may very well have their own insurance. Homosexuals are taxpayers and employees too!
I think the cost increase, if any, would be minimal and worth it.

Re: Spin-off of the Same Sex Marriage Threads
So if women's right would cost you ANY money then you would not want that. If everyone in this country thought 'oh, if this is going to cost me a dime I will not have it' then our country would have a serious problem.
The worst thing is that this is about Equal rights for people who live in our country. Equal rights do not cost us more money- it actually will cost us a lot more than money someday. Right this second we are all paying so people in Iraq can try and live within a democacry (that the US controls, of course). So we are paying billions of dollars for others to live free when people in this country don't.
Did you know that the number 1 reason of teen sucide is the that the child thinks they are gay? That is right...we make being gay soooo awful that a child would rather take their own life then live as a gay individual. And what would a law like this say to those kids?
Sorry, but this is NOT about money and even moron Bush isn't saying that it is. He is all about the 'morale' high ground...funny...he seems to forgot that on many other occassions!
The marriage tax is being phased out over many years but it is still there at this time and was there for many years.
If more people are insured, the cost of insuring them will increase and will ultimately come out of our pockets (whether it be increased premiums or cost-cutting measures, like diminished raises or downsizing). Any increased costs will fall ultimately upon the taxpayers/employees.
I personally had to fork up $100 more a month when I put DH on my plan when he was unemployed...
no way was he getting $100 in treatment a month!!!

Re: Spin-off of the Same Sex Marriage Threads
If you have an issue with money, then let's discuss welfare reform and saving social security...those itemss will cost us billions more than gay marriage will.
